CANDLE RANT OF THE DAY: Why is Halloween at BBW so Un-SPOOK-tacular? Halloween Candle Ideas

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYBODY!

And speaking of Halloween...

It always struck me as odd that despite how season-forward BBW is and how they're all about the holiday marketing, their Halloween fare is always kinda blah. First of all, their focus is always mainly on the bodycare..which is fine...although not everybody is into bodycare and if you're like me, you completely ignore them. And as far as home fragrance goes, it's always Shit Cinnamon Poopkin over and over and over! Even backintheday during the Golden Age, it was moreorless the same thing...although at least we had scents like Pumpkin Patch/Carving and Spiced Cider to mix things up. I mean finally a few years ago we got a candle version of Vampire Blood and eventually we got Ghoul Friends but there's always that persistent push for Shit Cinnamon Poopkin. With the exception of SCP, the few home fragrance we see is bodycare inspired and they kinda feel like an afterthought.

Here's the thing...especially in recent years, we get alllllllll of these fall inspired collections - we get a main collection with all of the fan favs, some kind of bakery and/or "pumpkin" collection and then all of these little random vaguely autumnal collections with scents just haphazardly thrown together with little to no rhyme or reason..and most of those collection are repeats with candles that are already in another collections ie. candles with 2-3 different labels and packaging. Here's a crazy whackadoo idea that I'm throwing out - why not have a whole home fragrance collection dedicated to Halloween?! Instead of having a duo/trio of bodycare candles, have a whole Halloween inspired collection amongst the other fall collections  Sooo many candles from the vault could work for a Halloween collection.

There is absolutely NO reason for Shit Cinnamon Poopkin to be constantly shoved down our throats on a continuous basis when this thing of beauty exists. This is 14.5 oz of pumpkiny goodness. I do not and will never understand BBW's indifference to it. And hello, the name says it all - you can't think of Halloween without carving pumpkins and making Jack o Lanterns.

For whatever reason, this was an online exclusive and its release was followed by the pandemic/lockdown so I don't think a lot of people got to try (I had it and it was really nice); why not bring it back for a fall collection as caramel scents tend to be more popular in fall. And it's certainly better Hot Cocoa & Cream that BBW constantly releases and/or repackages. You can call it "TRICK OR TREAT".

This was a really nice one hit wonder that BBW decided to completely ignore. Horrible craptastic burn but a lovely scent nonetheless. I think this would work great in a Halloween collection as it had a definite mid/late autumn vibe to it. Rename it "SPOOKY Night"

This can be "SCARY Woods".. ouuuhhhhhhh!!!!

Either of these would make a good "Haunted House" candle; both have a vibe that could replicate the dry ancient muskiness of an old house.

This is quite possibly the BEST apple scent BBW has ever created and it's a shame they've forgotten about it in favor of Farmstand/Heirloom/Honeycrisp Apple or worse, Mahogany Apple. A Halloween collection could be an opportunity to bring this back. This could be "Bobbing for Apples/Apple Bobbing"

This failed test candle (NOT the nationwide version from the following year) I think would make for a good WEREWOLF inspired candle. A werewolf/wolfman fragrance should be a mandle and Tailgate was/is one of the few mandles we ever got for fall. It's a leather based scent, which works as it's a musky manly note..also known in the fragrance making world as an "animalic" note . And with the moss and woody notes in the background, there's an outdoorsy vibe - think of a hot sweaty man running through the woods trying to escape the curse of the full moon. The original Tailgate is how I would imagine Taylor Lautner smelled during the filming of Twilight.

This I nominate to be a Mummy candle. You may be asking "why this candle?" I'll explain. In ancient Egypt, myrrh was used to annoint and embalm corpses during the mummifying process. For centuries, myrrh was always associated with mummies and dead bodies (Jesus Christ was said to be anointed with myrrh post-crucifixion). I cant think of a more fitting candle

This can be "Witch's Brew/Potion" . The combination of smoke along with the medicinal absinthe-esque star anise-ness could conjure images of a witch's cauldron bubbling and boiling over a fire.

And of course, Vampire Blood can be added to this collection.

And as for as signature body care inspired home fragrance goes, I think either Dark Kiss or Midnight Pomegranate could work. I mean there used to be candle versions of DK and MP backintheday (stores in the Middle East recently had updated versions of both), so bring em back.

Another idea is have a "pumpkin" collection as per usual but instead of cutesy cutesy cartoon pumpkin Basic B packaging it normally gets, give it a Halloween pumpkin patch theme.

You can have the typical fan favs like Pumpkin Cupcake and Vanilla Pumpkin Marshmallow, keep around scents like Pumpkin Snickerdoodle and Pumpkin Cookie Dough and throw in past scents like Spiced Pumpkin Cider  and Pumpkin Sugared Doughnuts ...all pumpkin themed things you might have at a Halloween party or festival or market. You can also throw in some non-bakery conceptual scents like Pumpkin Carving, Blueberry (BOO-berry) Pumpkin Patch, Pumpkin Clove, Pumpkin Hayride, White (Fright) Pumpkin, and/or Pumpkin Bonfire

Just something to think and ponder about BBW!

  1. I agree! The lineup you suggested is so balanced too. Something for everyone. I was disappointed that we didn’t get a haunted house this year (my wallet wasn’t though).
