WALK 'N' SNIFF/RANT OF THE DAY: Mermaid Candle Collection
So this review is gonna super short as there are only two scents in this collection worth talking about.
But first, I have to rant...
Over the past couple of years, BBW has been focusing on the looks of their candles and not so much the scents/fragrance themselves. These has caused a new phenomenon in the candle community I call "packaging whores" Packaging whores are folks who are bamboozled and flimflammed by cutesy cutesy labels and sparkling lids and go on social media saying asinine shit like..
"I don't care about the scent, I'm gonna buy this just for the packaging..."
....Excuse me, what did you say?! You don't care about the scent? You're buying a candle just because of the packaging?! Really?!
Packaging whores annoy me to no end and they are the part of the reason BBW is in the state that it's in. Why bother wasting manpower and creativity formulating new blends or bring back much beloved classics when these Basic Bettys are only buying cuz of how they look and not how they smell?!
Personally I think this this packaging whore attitude is both stupid and impractical and a waste of money. You're honestly gonna spend your hard earned coins on a candle not because of how it smells but how it looks. Somehow I just miss the logic in this. Furthermore those of us in the candle community who actually gives a crap about fragrance and buy candles because they smell good have to the settle with the most basic of scents cuz BBW plays it safe by pandering to packaging whores.
Which brings me to the Mermaid Collection.
Clearly BBW is pandering with this collection.. awesome theme, beautiful packaging, boring crappy scents. I can just see this collection being discussed in the BBW boardroom
"Okay, anyone got any ideas for a collection? What do girls like?
"Princesses?
"Unicorns?"
"Fairies?"
"...mermaids?!
"YES, MERMAIDS. Great idea Peterson! Bitches be lovin mermaids, amirite"
*nervous laughter *secretly dialing HR
"What about scents?"
"Pineapple Mango?
"Lavender Coconut? It's not a summer collection without coconut?"
Mahogany Teakwood!!! Bitches love Mahogany Teakwood!"
"... Uuum, sir, that word's not appropriate. Also what do these scents have to do with mermaids?"
"Peterson, you lack vision and insight. You're fired! Get out of my sight!"
...I digress
The point is this collection had potential and sooooo many awesome scents that actually made sense couldve been added..but nope. BBW played it safe and basic!
I'm tired of packaging whores...I'm tired of BBW catering to packaging whores...I'm tired of basic ass collections with scents that doesn't make any sense..I'm just..tired! Rant over. On to the review..
I won't waste your time or mine talking about Pineapple Mango or Ma-blah-gony Stankwood. And at this point, you should know what Ocean Citrus & Mist smells like cuz it's been around the block a few times
Mermaid Lagoon (8099AGA3) - so EVERYONE and their mermaid lovin grandma are going apesit over the packaging on social media (packaging whores) but hardly anyone has anything to say about what it smells like. Well I will..it's a repackage... Happily Ever After aka White Driftwood aka Wild Cedarwood. It's essentially Beach Cabana with added intense cedar note that gets even more intense after awhile. What this scent has to do with mermaids or lagoons is beyond me
Lavender Sea (8101AGA4) - ugh...I have to rant again. I love my candle peope on social media and appreciate folks posting newness and thoughts on said newness but in the name of all things scented, I'm gonna need these people to step their scent memory p***ies up!!! Now everyone assumed this scent was Lavender Coconut and when people asked if it was, these folks hemmed-and-hawed over the question preferring to reply with the same cops you always hear on social media - "I'm not good at describing scents..well, I'm not sure...no I don't really remember that scent. Anyway, after finally sniffing this bad boi, it is indeed without a doubt Lavender Coconut. I don't really understand the initial confusion but whatever. So yeah, if you liked that scent or if you find the combination of lavender and coconut appealing, well LS is for you!

It's like on one hand, I wish they would step up their packaging game on certain ones, like how they get super lazy with the quotes candles and the Times New Roman candles, but on the other hand, yeah, the candles with pretty packaging are GREAT. But there's literally no point in a candle you don't like the scent of. It's like people have forgotten what the point of a candle is!
ReplyDeleteYou can't win with BBW. I personally don't think that having both great packaging and great scents is asking for much; BBW did that effortlessly for years. I don't get why lately it's either one or the other
DeleteI am done trying to convince these newbies of the errors of their ways. If they wanna be stupid and waste their money, go for it
yeah
ReplyDeletesaves me a trip
Save your money. There are much better things coming our way soon
DeleteI'd never buy a candle just for the packaging, although lately many of them are really pretty but really what am I gonna do with it once the candle is done? No idea why the hell people waste their money like that. I'm all about the scent!
ReplyDeleteI bought vetiver hand soap from BBW that smells like a hospital because I just can't with these repackaged scents and the endless beach/coconut crap. I'm gonna trust you that better things are coming.
ReplyDeleteLol I asked on IG if Lavender Sea was lavender coconut and I got just what You said,,, something like I don’t remember it,,, lol! Personally I do LOVE LAVENDER Coconut!!
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree with you when it comes to this particular sentiment, you have to keep in mind that candles are in fact a home decor accessory. Some people use them as such, and not so much for their fragrance function.
ReplyDeleteI personally enjoy both nice packaging and nice scents, and have been known to buy ugly candles just for their nice fragrance (yes, even those damn quote candles), especially since my candles don't last very long so there is no point for me to engage in aesthetic buying. However, burning candles isn't allowed in all housing environments and I understand why someone might want it for the beauty of them. Let's face it, those mermaid candles do look absolutely stunning.
