RANDOM POST OF THE DAY: Coronavirus Panic...I mean Pandemic

Greetings my dear readers,

I know it's been a hella long time since I last posted, and you were probably all excited for a candle review of sorts but all you're getting is...CORONAVIRUS!

So ummm, yeah, things are getting real!

NYC is pretty much shut down and probably for awhile. Most public spaces where a crapton people can mingle are closed - Broadway theatres, museums, restaurants (no dine in, just takeout), bars, etc. Where I am in nearby Jersey isn't too much better. There have been a handful of people nearby in Jersey City and Hoboken who tested positive for COVID-19 so precautions (and paranoia) are high. In my apartment, the downstairs gym, the lounge and other public spaces are closed until further notice.

The big buzzword lately is self-isolation - keeping your ass at home, limiting your regular social interactions, only going in to work if absolutely necessary but otherwise work remotely (or not at all in some cases). I hear a lot of people grumbling about it on social media - I'm an introvert and a certified hermit/recluse so staying in and hunkering down doesn't bother me in the slightest. The bf and I are both working from home, we've got plenty of food, there's plenty to see on Hulu and Netflix, my PS4 is working, our cat is enjoying the company and attention...so yeah, I'm good. And any excuse to avoid traveling on the moving petri dish that is the train into The City is fine with me.

That means, no trips to BBW for awhile...not that I've gone much recently before all the Coronavirus madness...more about that.

That said, the bf and I did stop at a BBW/WB during a day of errands and stocking up. We realized we didn't have any spring/summer soaps, so we thought we'd pick up some. We get there; I look at the candles but there was nothing new except the Ceramic lid candles...meh. After looking around and not seeing anything interesting, we moseyed on over to the BBW side to look at the soaps. As I’m looking around, I overhear an older couple talking to one of the SAs; the lady was looking for pocketbacs and was told there weren’t any. Now I heard rumors that BBW stores nationwide were running out of pocketbacs but refused to believe. Sure enough, there wasn’t a single pocketbac in the entire store. But I noticed something…. while there no pocketbacs, there was a surplus, a plethora, an abundance of hand soaps. Let that sink…more people were buying pocketbacs than hand soap!

Even though there was a sale for hand soap…

Even though the CDC and health officials have that washing your hands is the best precaution…

Even though BBW’s pocketbac alcohol percentage is the bare minimum to combat the virus…

People were buying more pocketbacs than soap thus people are using hand sanitizer more than they are washing their hands!

Yall should be stocking up on soap, especially since so many people are gonna be home for awhile! And I refuse to believe folks are using pocketbacs all day at home. If you are going to work, using public transit, interacting with co-workers or customers, by all means use hand sanitizer…BUT you should also be washing your hands (and moisturizing so your hands aren’t dry and cracked..and susceptible to infections).

And what annoys, frustrates and depresses me is the overall stupidity and selfishness behind the mindset of stocking up. What are you gonna go do with all those pocketbacs…or Purell or toilet paper or bottled water. You’re not gonna go thru it all; it’ll all be sitting around collecting dust…even the ones be sold on eBay or other third-party markets..which don’t even get me started on that! Furthermore, because greedy selfish people are buying everything, that leaves little to none for the people who could use it more – the elderly, the sick/infirmed, the pregnant, the ones with compromised immune systems…y’know, people to whom COVID-19 can cause longer recovery time, major complications or worse, be fatal!

Point is, I’m asking…nay begging for you dear reader, to be safe but most importantly, be both smart and sensible.

If you can stay home, STAY HOME!

Of course, go to work if you must. Don’t touch anybody, keep some distance you and the person you’re talking to, and wash (and moisturize) your hands as much as you can! Bring hand sanitizer and (if you can) your own personal hand soap.

Let as few people into your home as possible. And while this is a time for distance and isolation, you can still interact with people – phone calls, text, email, Facetime, Glide, WhatsApp. Check up on your friends and family and make sure they’re ok physically, mentally and emotionally.

Start up a hobby or project to get your mind off of things, either by yourself, with partner and/or your family.

Buy the essentials in reasonable amounts. Try to go grocery shopping at a less populated time and keep your time in the store at a minimum.

If you must go to BBW, do not waste your time and money on candles (I know, sounds crazy). Candles you can buy online, suck it up and pay the S&H. If you must buy candles, make sure you clean the lid and tumbler with a bleach wipe.  If you’re there, you should really be buying soap, not pocketbacs, SOAP!

If you feel yourself getting sick, TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF! And stay away from other people as much as you can. Get online and learn the difference between allergies, cold/flu and COVID-19. If you think you have the tell-tale symptoms (fever, shortness of breath, dry coughs, etc) go to the doctor (if you can) Meanwhile isolate yourself, even from your partner or family. Yes, COVID-19 technically isn’t deadly in most cause HOWEVER you don’t know how fast you can transmit and how others can deal with it once infected.

I know this all feels very weird and surreal and uncertain; there is a definite sense of existential dread in the air. And the amount of misinformation on social media and stubborn wanton stupidity from certain parts of the populace isn’t helping. But you’ll be fine and you will get through this.

TAKE THE QUARANTINES AND CLOSED SPACES AND CURFEWS SERIOUSLY! This is NOT about a disease being deadly or even easily transmittable. It’s about hospitals nationwide being overwhelmed by patients all with a disease that isn’t treatable or controllable just yet.

Be smart, responsible, diligent, careful and compassionate.
