WALK 'N' SNIFF: Summer Juice Bar/Squeeze the Day Collection

So I finally made it out to GSP to see what WB/BBW had for SAS..shit, that's what they had. I walked out empty-handed and very disappointed and annoyed. They did have the Summer Juice Bar candles out which honestly wasn't much of a consolation. So let's just get right to the good stuff so to speak...

I won't waste your time or mine talking about Limoncello, Watermelon Lemonade or Island Margarita for obvious reasons.

Blueberry Twist
You would think with the moderate success of Blueberries and Cream in the Mimosas and Brunch collection (I had no idea that's what that collection was called, did y'all?) that BT would be a repackage of it. NOPE! It surprisingly smells totally different and it's a completely new blend. It's not nearly as tart/sour as B&C nor does it have that Greek yogurt-esque cream note. The tartness of the blueberries toned down dramatically and overall the blend is really candy-level sweet. The notes mention coconut...*eyeroll...I'm convinced BBW added that simply to get the basic bitches of America on board; there is absolutely NO coconut in this blend at all! BT is cute and I can easily see it being the runaway hit of this collection. My only complaint is this - the theme of this collection fruit juice/smoothie inspired scents and BT doesn't smell like a drink; if anything it smells like candy, more to the point, it smells exactly Livesavers Cremesavers hard candy . Maybe if there was more creme to make it more smoothie-like or some effervescence, some lemon or mint or elderflower. It's just missing something.

Raspberry Citrus Swirl
When I first heard about this scent, I was really hoping it would be a repackage of Pink Sangria or Blackberry Grapefruit from back in the day.Not so much. It is a repackage alright, just not of either of those. It is without a doubt straight Smile ~ Pink Lemonade Punch

Yes newbies, THIS is a repackage of Smile, NOT Pomegranate Lemonade!

Anyway, this has the same odd and somewhat off-putting berries n creme aspect as Smile. The only difference is that there is a splash of orange/grapefruit but not enough to make it smell new or exciting.

Pina Colada Smoothie
So this SOB snuck in outta nowhere! I was sure that this would be the grand return of Island Colada, which is an awesome Slatkin era scent and one of the few coconut heavy scents that I tolerate. Alas, it is not. For reason I can not remotely comprehend, BBW went in a totally different direction and decided to repackage Golden Pineapple Luau instead...which is so f***ing bizarre and makes no sense whatsoever. First of all, given BBW's obsession with coconut, you would think this would be right up their alley; the one scent that actually should have coconut in it doesn't! Seriously, mango, pineapple, grapefruit - does BBW NOT know what's in an actual pina colada?! And why repacakage a scent that is already still in stores and on sale? If BBW was desperate for a pineapple scent, why not bring back Pineapple Lychee Smoothie which smells like a friggin smoothie?! Or better yet, why not bring back Island Colada which actually smells like a f***ing pina colada?!!!

You would think with the success of Summer Sips back in '14, BBW would come up with something equally as awesome. Poptails last summer was just aiight, but this collection is just awful, the absolute most lamest collection in BBW history! The spring/summer already sucked with a constant onslaught of the most basic candle collections back to back. And given that this SAS was the absolute worst, this shitty collection is what we have to look forward to? And what pisses me off so much about this collection is that it had potential to be a awesome collection that would have every candle fan across the nation mouths' watering and emptying their pockets!

And to sell nonlayered candles online just to get people to go to stores instead cuz of course people want the layered ones...really BBW?!

So many amazing and unique scents could've been brought back for this collection - Bahama Fizz...Strawberry Daiquiri... Blackberry Grapefruit...Raspberry Sun Tea..Nectarine Green Tea...SUMMERTIME SODA...Lime Granita Margarita or Sparkling Mojito...Peach Cilantro Twist...Island Colada or Coconut Water...Champagne Toast or Seaside Mimosa...Honeydew & Thyme...Apple Ale. Instead of making Pomegranate Lemonade a WB core scent, it could've been in this collection instead!

It just makes no sense! Real talk BBW, y'all have got to do better than this...get it the f*** together ASAP!

BLAST FROM THE PAST: Raspberry Sun Tea (2012)

Products: candle
Area used in:  living room
Time Period: end of May - mid of July

Description: Refreshingly bright and fruity, a delicious blend of Darjeeling tea, sugared raspberries and juicy peach

Spring 2012 was the best year of spring scents! There was so much bountiful variety - tropical scents, beachy scents, tons of florals, fruity concoctions and drinks/cocktails. And I wasn't interested in any of them. What an idiot I was, a closed-minded idiot for not taking advantage of truly unique scents that were available that season including this gem. Though that said I don't remember seeing this in my stores and it's twin, Peachy Tea. So to make up for my stupidity, I've been trying out Slatkin era scents that I poo-poo'ed back in that day. I just happened to see this on Evilbay for a remarkably cheap price so I bought it without thinking.

As I said before, Spring 2012 was Slatkin/BBW at it's peak spring/summer scent-wise. Unfortunately the drawback was despite the over abundance of new and unique scents, the burn performance for the most part was pretty shitty - lot of tunneling/canyoning and self-extinguishing wicks. I was worried this candle's performance would be craptastic and in the very beginning, it was kinda iffy. But after a few burns, the candle corrected itself; the flames were of a decent size and there were always deep and even wax pools. Also can I say I miss the days when candles had longer burn times; the first couple of times I burned it, I barely made a dint in it. The throw is decent, I'd describe it as medium-strong; not a knockout but far from weak.

The scent is pretty straight forward - it's smell like raspberry flavored ice tea. More to the point, it smells exactly like Lipton Brisk raspberry iced tea ...which was my jam back in the 90s as a kid. I'm not usually a fan of anything flavored/scented berry, especially raspberry for some reason, but I'm willing to overlook my bias with this scent. The raspberry is pleasant albeit artifial, like raspberry tea or Kool-aid powder. And I swear, I keep picking up the same pomegranate note similar to Pomegranate Spritzer or Pomegranate Lemonade. I do get tea, though whether it's Darjeeling (my favorite kind of tea) or not remains to be seen. It's a tart black tea note similar to London Calling/Southern Sweet Tea but with a more acidic tannin flavor...which makes sense if there truly are Darjeeling tea notes. And lastly lurking in the background is white peach/nectarine that adds more sweetness, tartness and juicy that pairs quite nicely with the tea notes

Think Southern Sweet Tea + Pomegranate Spritzer + Nectarine Green Tea = Raspberry sun Tea...basically

I've found myself really enjoying this; I personally like this way more than London Calling/Southern Sweet Tea. It's a shame this hasn't come back as it could've easily been in the Summer Sips or Poptails collection; this could have and should have easily replaced Raspberry Citrus Swirl in the upcoming Poptails collection. There's just something quintessentially summer-ish; it's just one of those refreshing scents that's perfect for a hot humid summer afternoon.  If you see this on Ebay or Amzon and it's reasonably ie under$25, get it!

RANT OF THE DAY: Why is there no "Summer" candle?

Well gang, it is a officially summertime! As a Southerner used to humid sub-tropic climate, I could not be happier. I'm soakin up all the sun and heat I can until it's back to sweaters and longjohns again.

The Summer Solstice had me thinking something - why isn't there an official "Summer" candle?

The Winter candle has been out consistently for many years. So has Autumn. This year we saw the grand albeit random return of Spring; although it's not nearly as old as its sisters, it was for awhile a seasonal staple. All 3 scents perfectly captured the essence of each season perfectly. Why hasn't summer received its own season in a jar candle?

Well, technically that's not true. Back in '13, there was a failed test scent called "White Barn Summer" which as it turns out was a repackage of...wait for it...EUCALYPTUS MINT AND RAIN!!!

"Enjoy the bright scent of a long, sunny summer day with this blend of water blossoms, mint leaves, and a hint of eucalyptus."

Clearly BBW was grasping at straws with this one. I dunno about y'all but, there's nothing about EM&R that reminds me of summer. They tried desperately to make EM&R a summer scent again in the Coastal Cool collection as "Eucalyptus Mint and WAVES". Really BBW, REALLY?!

But why did BBW wait til 2013 to come up with a Summer candle, only for it to fail? And why EM&R? And why hasn't there been any attempt to make a new replacement?

Maybe they figured no one would be interested. As soon as December SAS is over, we get an onslaught of beachy/tropical scents. And lately, everything has coconut in it. Would people be interested in a non-beachy non-tropical scent with nary a hint of coconut in it? I say yes, there are plenty of us with more discerning taste just begging for such a scent

Here a few choices that I think would make good candidates to the official "Summer" candle
  • Coastal Sun/Citrus Flower - despite having "coastal" in the name, there's nothing really beachy about it. On  the other hand, the "sun" aspect is accurate - it just makes me think of summer sunshine
  • Calypso Sun - mandarin, peach and mango...what's not to love
  • Sunkissed Blossom - peach mixed jasmine, freesia and lilac...tell me that doesn't sound lovely?!
  • Lakeside/Verbena Waters - this has something for everybody - it's a little fruity, a little fresh, watery and dewy with amrotherapy-ish woodsy notes thrown in for good measure. This scent just makes me think of a hot humid summer day in the South
  • Sunflower - mandarin and grapefruit with green tea and musk, that sounds amazing
  • White Citrus - citrus heavy scents always make me think of summer
  • Summer Orchard peach, orange, mango with jasmine and sandalwood, it doesn't get any better than that
  • Summer Melon - look, summer is right there in the name! And you can't get anymore summery than watermelon; and a little peach, pineapple and papaya,  that's summer in a jar
What are some scents that y'all think would make a good Summer candle?

NEWNESS UPDATE: Random Candle Releases

For those of you not on social media, BBW has recently released some new candles completely out of the blue and they're very random.

So there's a quartet of White Barn Core scents that have been sneaking into both BBW and WB stores in the past couple of days. They aren't test scents nor are they exclusives so if they're not in your stores, just be patient.

Strawberry Cupcake - The irresistible fragrance of buttercream frosting made from garden strawberries on a classic Madagascar vanilla cupcake

Just based on the name and notes, I had a feeling this scent was gonna be basic as hell. After sniffing it, my assumption was correct - it's basic! This is quite possibly one of the most blah smelling scents I've ever huffed at BBW! The good thing is that isn't a repackage - it's not Strawberry Vanilla nor is it Happy Easter/Strawberry Sorbet/Strawberry Picnic...but that's the only good thing about it. The name is really misleading cuz it doesn't really smell like a cupcake.  Now you would think based on the name that it would be some variant on Frosted Cupcake/Buttercream Frosting or Vanilla Bean/Vanilla Bean Marshmallow..nope. There's no cake aspect or frosting at all! You get a faint hint of generic vanilla and the bakery notes come across more as flaky like a pie crust; if anything this smells more like a strawberry pie than a strawberry cupcake. And then there's that strawberry note. Again, very faint. And it doesn't quite smell like strawberry but rather vaguely berry-ish, very nondescript. It almost comes across more like raspberry. That said, I've mentioned this to my candlebuddies on IG and they all agree, it smells sooooo similar to Gelato  /  Raspberry Peach Macaron. I don't think it's a straightup repackage (or perhaps it is with a tweak.) but there's no denying their similarities. Honestly this candle is such a waste of time and effort. The whole strawberry/vanilla combo has been done to death and BBW has yet to make a decent blend. And there are so many better options - they could've brought back Pinkpetal Teacake or Pink Lemonade Poundcake or Strawberry Rhubarb Marmalde or just plain ol Raspberry Peach Macaron.

Pomegranate Lemonade - A fragrance inspired by an ice-cold glass of fresh-squeezed lemon juice, pomegranate nectar and a touch of sugar

I'd like to make a general announcement...

ATTENTION NEWBIES!!! POMEGRANATE LEMONADE IS NEITHER SMILE,  WINE DOWN OR POMEGRANATE SPRITZER!!! IT IS NOT A REPACKAGE!!!

This is the much anticipated re-release of the Slatkin era Pomegranate Lemonade which was for awhile a summer staple but alas has not been seen since spring 2012. Since then we have seen clones of PL, namely Pink Sangria and Pomegranate Spritzer, both of which are very very similar but not straightup repackages nor were they as good as the original.

Sigh...I hate how dumbed down the notes are. Compare the new notes with the old classic notes...

"Juicy pomegranate, pink grapefruit and lemon zest blend deliciously and then are infused with rose petals, sheer woods and sugared citron for a refreshing treat"

Now doesn't that sound better?! Anyhoo, the scent is very straightforward - you get intense citrus notes with a splash of zesty pomegranate. It's mouthpuckeringly zesty but at the same time sweet without being obnoxiously candy-like. It's zesty, it's juicy, it's bright, it's refreshing - just a perfect candle for summertime! I've been wanting this scent to come back and now that it is, I could not be happier!

Also returning is Lavender Vanilla and Summer Boardwalk. Just a headsup..both of these are significantly light on cold throw that past versions

Now as y'all, we're getting another (lackluster) Poptails collection after SAS. It seems a new scent in this collection has appeared post-test phase...

Pina Colada Smoothie - Glow with this amazing combination of mango nectar, crushed pineapple and sweet grapefruit

*facepalm

WTF BBW?!!! Do you guys NOT know what's in a pina colada?! The one time there should be coconut in a scent, there isn't any!

Now back in the Slatkin days there was an actually pina colada inspired scent called Island Colada and it was pretty darn good..for a coconut scent. (FYI there are 2pack wf bulbs of IC online, buy em!) I  was REALLY hoping this would be a repackage of that but NOPE! There was also another scent called Coconut Waters with pina colada-esque notes (coconut milk, vanilla, pineapple, citrus) that would've worked as well but again, NOPE. Here's yet another example of BBW wasting time and effort on a sub par new scent instead of bringing back a classic that actually makes more sense. Now I haven't seen or sniffed this but according to my sources, the scent is very heavy on the pineapple and is a total repackage of...wait for it...Golden Pineapple Luau. Why BBW, just why?!!!
