WALK 'N' SNIFF: Fall Preview

So yesterday out of boredom, I went to the BBW store in The City if they were doing the infamous Fall Preview..and indeed they were indeed...

One lone pitiful stand ALLLLLLLLLL the way in the back of the store!

So as you can see, the store had everything that the Fall Preview was supposed to have...for the most part...

No Pumpkin coffret and I don't remember seein that Apple Buttered Rum Body Care...not that I was remotely interested in that.

So first off, the 3layered fall candle...ewww, just eewwwwww!!! Why?!Sweater Weather, Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin and Pumpkin Apple, three scents that just don't go together! At least last year's 3layer candle was all pumpkin scents. What made BBW think of this random combo?! They could've made so many other BETTER choices...

Sweater Weather/Autumn/Fresh Balsam or Autumn Day as they're all fresh outdoorsy scents
Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin/Heirloom Pumpkin/Pumpkin Apple since they all have spice
Leaves/Pumpkin Apple/Heirloom Pumpkin
Pumpkin Cupcake/Pumpkin Caramel Latte/Pumpkin Pecan Waffles or Vanilla Pumpkin Marshmallow

The combinations are endless!!! But whatevs, they made their choice and folks are already clamoring and wetting themselves over this mess!

Then of course there is Leaves, autumn in a jar! And it smells fallgasmic as usual!

And then there's Pumpkin Apple returning since making it's debut last fall! I wasn't a big fan of it then and I certainly am not now. It just smells so generic and waxy/plasticy..like melted apple-cinnamon scented crayons. The wf bulbs are better; kinda smells like a mix of Spiced Cider and Pumpkin Carving.

And last but not least...Green Apple Orchard...oy friggin vey...

When I first heard about this SOB, I was excited..I LOVE green apple scents. I thought it would be a nice crisp juicy apple similar to Apple Crumble or Spring/Garden Party. Then I saw the notes - amber and sandalwood; I thought to myself "Dammit, they done missed this up!" I thought this might be a repackage of the old New York, New York destination candle as that had amber in the notes which by all accounts smelled like a dirty rotten apple core that fell out of the garbage on to the street and was bakin in the noonday sun somewhere in Brooklyn. I decided to hold off judgment til I smelled it for myself...and I did...and I HATED it! It's the strangest and weirdest thing I ever smelled. It just smells wrong! You barely recognize the so-called green apple note! Combined with the amber and sandalwood notes, it kinda smelled like old shampoo/condition or body wash! As one of my Facebook friends said the other day, "This went wide, but Tailgate didn't?! " I dunno know what BBW was thinkin when they come up with this mess, it's really bad!

The highlight of this shitshow of a preview was the soap...Weekend Apple Picking..OMG..holy f***balls! This is soooooo good! It's like apple Jolly Ranchers...and I don't even like apple Jolly Ranchers! I LOVE this soap! It rivals my all time favorite fall apple-y soap, Warm Apple Cider. It's currently on sale for $3 so get while you can!

So yeah that's about it. I didn't wind up buying anything..though in hindsight I should've bought some soap. Ah well, it'll be around and I'm sure it'll be on sale again. It would've been nice if the candles were on sale cuz I sho'nuff would have bought some Leaves. All good though, I'm just gonna wait patiently til the Artisan candles (hopefully other fall candles as well) make their debut in stores up here and I get that wonderful email saying that there's a 2/22!

Products: candle
Area used in:  living room
Time Period: July-August

Description: Catch some beautiful rays with this blend of vibrant orange, zesty grapefruit and bright California days

I just realized that it's been awhile since I've done this kind of review.  And I know that this particular candle has been around for awhile but like they say, "better late than never"

Honestly I don't remember when exactly I bought this bad boy. After saying that I wouldn't buy anything from this particular line because it didn't have proper metal lids, I did wind up getting this one as it was the least light smelling one in the bunch. It sat around until I was ready to burn it; perfect timing as the weather at the time was becoming more summery.
Now I'm finally at the butt end of it and I couldn't be happier cuz eventually I did get a wee bit bored with it. It wasn't bad or stinky by any means, just not very exciting.

Alright so let's get down to brass tacks. Coastal Sun is a repackage (no surprise) of an ancient Slatkin era scent called Citrus Flower. The notes were...

"The perfect blend of meyer lemon, sparkling mandarin, and orange flower layered with sweet jasmine and green verbena."

As you can see, back on those days Slatkin was very straightforward with the notes instead of the basic pretty sounding three note BS  we see on candles nowadays. With that said, pay little to no attention to the notes given on the bottom of the CS candle but rather the Citrus Flower notes cuz that's essentially what you smell. You get bright zesty lemony kick from the Meyer lemon and verbena notes combined with juicy orange/mandarin and grapefruit. The jasmine and orange flowers softens and sweetens the otherwise tart and mouthpuckering citrus blend, almost making it a little powdery. Combined, the notes make this candle smell exactly like Sunny Delight...I mean it smells EXACTLY like Sunny D!

Performance-wise, it was A-OK! The wax at first kinda took awhile to fully melt out but eventually it fixed itself and there was always a deep even pool from that point on. The flames were reasonably high despite not having mushroom tops. It was very pretty to burn at night; the flames would dance and flicker behind the frosted yellow glass. The throw was medium-ish, it barely filled up my living room. I was kinda ok with that, I don't think this would be a scent that you would want to be "put you in chokehold" strong. Although once it got down to the very end and all of the wax was completely melted, it somehow maximized in strength and filled the whole place. Better late than never!

Unfortunately, this was one of the few Coastal Cool scents without matching wf bulbs so I matched the candle with the closest and most similar scent I could think of - Pomelo Grapefruit. The two blended quite well.

In conclusion, CS is a cute scent for summer - it's sweet and bright and sunny and fun. It's not the best summer scent ever but it's certainly not the worst. If you haven't yet succumbed to fall scent mania and are lookin for a scent for the remainder of summer, I'd recommend this one. I don't regret buying and burning this candle and I don't think you will either.

RANT OF THE DAY: The Test Scent Blues!!!!

It's been a awhile since I've written anything on here. Quite frankly, due what's been goin on lately I haven't felt inspired to write anything...until now. Let's start at the beginning.

So as most of you already know Garden State Plaza, the mecca of all things test scenty second only to Easton, is no longer a test store..at least that's what the word on the street is. The week after SAS, GSP had nary a test scent to sell yet Easton was chockfull of them. Naturally some folks like myself were a bit concerned. Time went by and rumours started circulating that GSP had stopped being a a test store though few folks were skeptical - it made absolutely no sense why such a huge store in huge mall in a prime location where there aren't many BBW/White Barn stores in the region would suddenly quit being a test store sans logic or reason. However over time, it was starting to look like the rumours were true. When folks called the store, SAs would rudely and without provocation announce that it was indeed no longer a test store and customers would have no choice but to simply do without. Utter bullshit!

I for one am pissed the f*** OFF!!! I moved all the way up here from the Deep South, the prospect of being so near GSP was one of the many perks of the move. When I arrived, things were fine; the Summer Sips had just arrived and things were all to the good. And now zip, zilch, nada, nothing!

And now fall test scent mania has taken hold of candle lovers across the nation. That very first week after SAS, folks were already showin off there fall test scent hauls on Instagram which spread from one candle group to the next on Facebook. All of the other bloggers were sharing their fall test scent info and a few well known Youtubers had already uploaded their candle hauls. I'll be honest...it was too much and I was getting more and more bitter and upset.  Here are all of these folks showin off stuff that I wouldn't be able to get..or rather I wouldn't be able to get very easily or cheaply.

People are getting desperate. A few test scents are already available on Evil-bay. Some BBWers are even willing to make the long sojourn to Easton themselves from various regions. I've seen folks begging either fellow BBW'ers or friends and relatives who happen to live near Easton or the random White Barn stores who randomly have test scents to get candles for them.

My question is simply this...why? Why the secrecy? Why must things be so clandestine and hush-hush? Why must test scents be so exclusive? Why are there test scents and test stores to begin with?

You did away phone orders to GSP and Easton...you did away with phone orders to Customer Relations...and now, the cherry on top of the cake, you did away with GSP. Again I ask...WHY?

You can throw all kinds legal/business/marketing/consumer/capitalistic bullshit at people all you want, with talk of numbers and percentages and what have you. Bottom line is you're going to release wide whatever scents you want regardless of what any of us think, want or prefer. There have been scents that you guys have released in the past that had everyone scratching their heads in utter confusion, disappointment and overall "wtf-ery". Yet the scents that are good and that everyone is clamoring for (for example last spring's Lavender Marshmallow" are not released and are kept hidden and sequestered in test stores. Again, WHY?

Why can't ALLLLLL of these scents been available to EVERYONE?! Why can't all stores be test stores?! Or make testing scents "online exclusives"? No matter what you say to justify it, it's just not fair that test scents are available to some but not others, period!

Again I ask, why the secrecy? True test stores with the idea of truly testing potential products was well and good back in the Slatkin era where social media was in its fetus days and your average person didn't have a camera phone. However things have changed over there years. BBW/White Barn candles have blown up in the past few years thanks to SOCIAL MEDIA. You have bloggers and Youtubers giving people information and reviews, hyping up the goods scents and warning folks off the bad ones. Nowadays you can take a picture of a candle or the store itself with your phone and upload it to both Instagram and Facebook in a couple of seconds. You can't keep test scents secret anymore. People in the comfort of their homes can see and be informed about your "secret" candles. Naturally they are going to want them and some kind of way will get them. Which brings me to my next point.....

You are aware that, as I mentioned earlier, that fall tests are readily available on Ebay, right? This is nothing new and has been going on for years. You're soooo desperate to keep these scents so secret and exclusive and people are taking advantage of that. They're going to your "secret" test stores, buying your "secret" test scents, going home and selling them on Evilbay..and not cheaply. You could be making soooo much more money selling these test scents to EVERYONE but no, you'd rather them keep them "secret" for sake of testing and having pure numbers and percentages. So, all that money you could be profiting from are instead going right into these Evilbay sellers' pockets!

And now, the last bit of my rant. Due to the even more exclusiveness of test scents, the blog world has been become even more competitive with reviewers and even non-reviewers rushing to get pics and info out there first before anyone else does. And for the first time, I felt the crunch. I admit that sometimes I feel overshadowed by other reviewers but I never really let it bother me too much; my blog and Youtube channel and Tumblr were all for the sake of fun, purely shits and giggles. But now I felt the need to compete and stay relevant. Let's face it, we all like newness..that's a human trait that no one is devoid of. I figured if I talked about test scents, I'd be propelled from my lowly station to somewhat higher heights. Also I was looking forward to the prospect of getting test scent information on my own without having to gleam and regurgitate info already shared by other bloggers. Now with GSP done with, that can't happen thus I felt left in the dust. For awhile I considered calling it quits - shut down my blog and Youtube channel as well as deactivate Facebook . Reviewing and just BBW in general simply wasn't fun anymore, I lost my passion. But some very dear, sweet people on Facebook were real with me and talked me out of this decision...so as you can see, I'm still here!

In conclusion, this whole test scent thing is just getting out of hand! It's beyond absurd and frankly, I'm over it!

NEW IDEA OF THE DAY: Holiday Inspired Candles

So 4th of July is tomorrow and I was thinkin to myself "what's a good candle to burn on that day?" I couldn't think of anything. There wasn't anything released in past few months that seemed appropriate. That got me to do some thinkin. While BBW has candles for various seasons, they don't really have candles for specific holidays. Well that's not entirely true..back in 2012 there was Thanksgiving (which was STANK) as well White Barn Christmas... that's it!
I think it would be a cool idea if there were candles inspired by a specific holiday and released right before said holiday. Or a small little group of scents inspired by different aspects of a certain holiday.

Let's start with the 4th July

BBW could have a patriotic themed 3layered red, white and blue candle like Yankee's America the Beautiful candle ; red = strawberry, white = almond/vanilla frosting or whipped cream or lemon meringue and blue = blueberry/blackberry

In addition to that or separately, you could have a group of Independence day inspired scents

an apple pie candle would be nice (and no, not a repackage of Apple Crumble or Cider Donuts)
maybe a lemonade scent (and no, not Limoncello or Watermelon Lemonade though I suppose both are popular scents so either could be repackaged.)
Better yet, bring back friggin Summertime Soda for pissakes!
and you gotta have a barbeque/campfire scents...you could use Campfire Cookout or even Summertime S'mores/Marshmallow Fireside if you're desperate. Your best bet would probably be Vanilla Firewood from last winter cuz it really did legit smell like barbeque sauce and mesquite chips

You could do conceptual scents...

have a fireworks themed candle and it could smell something like Fireside. Or a military themed one which could be a repackage of the more manly cologne-y scents - Whitewater Birch, Sage and Cedar or, probably the best choice, Boathouse Row.

Let's move on to the other holidays...

This fall, BBW is releasing 3 Halloween themed candles - Toil and Trouble
Trick or Treat, Vampire Blood. I'm sure 2 of these are a repackage of Spiced Cider and Pumpkin Carving

In 2012, there was a Thanksgiving candle and it was absolutely repulsive, like instant mashed potatoes just added to cold unboiled water. You have the chance to revamp and make it actually good. Use an actual sweet potato/yam note with lots of vanilla, brown sugar and autumn spices and creamy butter with spiced candies walnuts of pecans and maybe cranberry.

You could also have other side items as candles - a pumpkin pie candle (Pumpkin Carving/Heirloom Pumpkin), cranberry dressing (Cranberry Cider or Cranberry Harvest) and dinner roll candle (French Baguette)

On to Christmas. Again in 2012, there was a Christmas candle that was released on Black Friday special; it was a repackage of Apple Spruce/Apple Garland...nothing special! Again, you have the opportunity to revamp it and make it better. You have soooo many choices - Tis the Season, Winter Garland, Winter Wonderland etc

Also back in day, Slatkin had fancy sets of holiday themed candles - The Perfect Christmas or something like that. One was Winter/Spice/Tree/Frosted Cranberry and another was Fireside/Winter/Evergreen. We can have a new set this time

Tis the Season                              Tis the Season                             Winter
Fireside                                        Twisted Peppermint                     Fireside
Evergreen                                     Evergreen                                    Evergreen or Fresh Balsam

or bring back old Slatkin Era scents..
Winter Garland
Winter Wonderland
Sleigh Ride

Slatkin also had a fancier holiday set, Holiday Garland (Tis the Season)/Holiday Pomander/Spiced Chestnut (Winter Cabin/Chestnuts&Cloves) Bring that beat back. It could be super fancy with an old-fashioned Christmas feel or even better, a Victorian/Dickens/Christmas Carol type feel. You could use scents like - Winter Garland, Holiday Pomander, Holly Wreath, Chestnut&Clove, Sleigh Ride and Frosted Tree.

And for New Year's, have Champagne Toast be the official New Years candle

For Valentines Day, you could have a nice rose scent. Or repackage the old Aromatherapy Passion candle; I think the notes were rose, black pepper bergamot. Or maybe a chocolate covered strawberry candle... How sexy would that be?

I also think Lavender Marshmallow should be the official Easter candle. Maybe have that with Garden Party or Green Grass as well as a new chocolate candle.

Mardi Gras = king cake scent or even Cinnamon Frosting

St. Patrick's Day = Emerald Isle Destination candle

Cinco de Mayo = Island Margarita or Mango Margarita or Mango Cilantro

Mother's Day = Flower Shop, Garden Freesia, Pink Petal Teacake

Father's Day = Black Pepper Bergamot or Oakmoss Vetiver

Just something to think about BBW...
