NEW IDEA OF THE DAY: Ideas for next fall

Well with Thanksgiving right around the corner, fall is pretty much over. That said I wanted to make one last fall themed post; I'm gonna throw some ideas for next fall since this fall was a hot mess!

So this year as a precursor to the upcoming fall candles, y'all had the Cork & Vine collection which was...uuummmmm....yeah

How about next ya'll have a..wait for...Country Fair collection, with blue ribbons on the labels. Y'all can have scents like... Apple Crumble, Caramel Apple, Cotton Candy, Cinnamon Sugared Doughnuts, Cider Lane, Summertime Soda, Toffee Glazed Popcorn, Chocolate Bacon Cupcake
Strawberry Rhubarb Marmalade, Market Peach...savory scents that'll sort of wet everybody's appetites for fall

For the main fall collection, I'd love to see a more metropolitan themed collection - fall in the city; long walks in the park in your favorite sweater, sipping a PSL while watching leaves fall..y'know basic bitchy. Of course in this collection there be the classics like Leaves, Autumn, Sweater Weather, Flannel, Marshmallow Fireside but y'all can also throw in scents like Tailgate (the original Tailgate, not that crap we got in '14), Autumn Night. AND NO MAHOGANY FRIGGIN TEAKWOOD!

Now then...can we talk?! Let's talk about..pumpkins! These all pumpkin collections we've seen for the past 3 years have been down to DEATH! BBW has beaten that dead horse into a fine bloody pulp! And newsflash BBW...we're on to your lil game...throwin a whole bunch of cinnmaon into a scent does not a pumpkin scent make. Furthermore we are all TIRED of scents that supposedly have pumpkin in it but smells more like bakery like Cranberry Pumpkin. I suggest going back to 2011-2012 and having a fall inspired bakery line. Better yet, a coffeehouse theme collection. Of course, you'll have the ol tried and true pumpkiny favs like Pumpkin Caramel Latte, Pumpkin Cupcake, Pumpkin Sugared Doughnuts  and Vanilla Pumpkin Marshmallow but you can also throw in Vanilla Chai or Iced Almond Chai, Gourmet Espresso, Cinnamon Tea, Warm Caramel Cider (if Cider Lane isn't used). And this collection is practically screaming for some Slatkin era classics - Oatmeal Raisin Cookie, Sticky Toffee Pudding, S'mores. And as for the usual "pumpkin" scents that would normally go into a "pumpkin" collection, I suggest playing around with the names. For example

Blueberry Pumpkin Patch = Spiced Blueberry Muffin

You don't have to put "pumpkin" onto labels to get people *cough *cough basic bitches on board. I promise these scents are gonna have them creamin their leggings!

Next I would like to see an actual harvest collection a la Fresh Picked with sort of a farm fresh feel -
Harvest Gathering, Autumn Apple, Pear, Porchside Pumpkin, Autumn Day, Cranberry Harvest, Pumpkin Apple, Spiced Pumpkin Cider, Pumpkin Carving, Fresh Picked Berries, Pumpkin Hayride, Butternut Squash. Notice I didn't mention of Farmstand Apple and Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin; FA is disgusting and tired and so is Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin; that mess should only be in body care. With Pumpkin Carving/Heirloom Pumpkin and Pumpkin Pie available, there is absolutely NO need for a SCP candle!

Lastly I'd like a more conceptual sophisticated high end comfy-cozy White Barn collection like the ombre glass collection from this year but with scents that are actually good, make sense (Beautiful Day, really?!) and aren't in other collections. For this collection I nominate the following - Cranberry Woods, Nutmeg & Spice, Brandied Pear, Plum Wine Amber, Kitchen Spice, Cedarwood Oak, Lavender Caramel and my bae Black Pepper Bergamot!

Speakin of which, how about some bodycare for us guys?! Yes BBW, believe or not guys actually shop there and not to get gifts for their moms and girlfriends. And there are a few of us regardless of orientation who don't particularly wanna smell like fruits, flowers and cupcakes but are tired of Noir, Ocean and Twilight Woods. How about a shower gel, pocketbac, body spray AND candle of ... Black Pepper Bergamot!!! Maybe Oakmoss & Vetiver or the original Tailgate or Boathouse Row? NO MAHOGANY TEAKWOOD!!!

And now Halloween... Can I say that this year's Spooky Vanilla and last year's Trick or Treat were both lazy and unispired BS? Pumpkin Carving needs to be the official Halloween candle. Maybe have a candy corn candle or a 3layer to look like candy corn with Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin Cupcake and Vanilla Pumpkin Marshmallow? Or how about a Vampire Blood candle? You guys have been into a soap/pocketbac into candle kick lately, I think that would make a fun candle.

Similarly Thanksgiving, the Thanksgiving collection was cute was still lacking. Next year, lets have scents that actually make sense - Pumpkin Pie, Cranberry Pumpkin, Cranberry Harvest, Gourmet Espresso, Spiced Cider, French Baguette etc

And last but not least, here are some new scents that I would love to see...
a candle version of Crisp Morning Air or Fall Lakeside Breeze
apple pie (and not Apple Crumble or Apple Pumpkin Pancakes)
blackberry pie
apple butter
hazelnut coffee
sweet potatoes/yams (and not Thankgiving from '12)
a tea scent like Earl Grey
corn or a conceptual corn maze scent

And there you have it! Get it together BBW!!!!

HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYBODY!!!!

CANDLE RETROSPECTIVE: Pumpkin Carving vs Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin

With autumn pretty much drawing to a close, I wanted to take an opportunity to talk about a very undervalued autumn scent - Pumpkin Carving.

Now as y'all already know, due to a past encounter with Shit Cinnamon Poopkin, I developed a strong and intense pumpkin scent phobia which I've only just recently gotten over. Despite hearing from other fellow candle connoisseurs of how superior Pumpkin Carving was to SCP, I just couldnt get down with PC. I tried experimenting with a PC wf bulb and though I enjoyed the scent, I just couldn't commit to a candle. Finally this fall I took the plunge and I bought/burned a 3wick; I could kick myself for ignoring for so long.

Now I do believe PC predates SCP (someone correct me if I'm wrong). It first came on the scene in the mid 2000 as "The Perfect Autumn Pumpkin" - very fitting name. The name was eventually changed to "Pumpkin Patch". Then in fall '12 it appeared (4oz only) as " Pumpkin Carving" and was released in a free gift with purchase deal. It was fully released in various forms the following year.

In fall 2014, we saw Heirloom Pumpkin which had the same notes as PC (it also appeared randomly online this fall). Call me and my nose crazy but Heirloom Pumpkin smelled different to me. It was super heavy on the nutmeg; PC was blended better I think.

I've never fully understood BBW's obsession with SCP and why they continue to push it despite knowing that PC was/is a legitimately better and superior pumpkin scent? Why do folks *cough cough basic bitches clamor over SCP?

To me, PC is like watching an old Shirley Temple movie - sweet, wholesome and unassuming. Whereas SCP is like watching Honey Boo Boo - common, annoying, offensive and lacking in depth, tact and class.

BBW, do yourself a favor and retire SCP! No one likes the body care nor the candle! Stop playing it safe and hiding behind its presumed popularity. If you were to retire SCP and instead pushed PC (and her sexy lumbersexual brother Porchside Pumpkin), I promise you that not a single soul will miss it.

DROPPIN CANDLE KNOWLEDGE: The History of "Mandles"

So this post was inspired by a video I made several months ago and forgot to post on Youtube; it was about my favorite type of fragrance from BBW - "cologney" scents or "mandles" as I like to call them. Cologney scents tend to get a lot of hate-ration from BBW community...mainly from the cupcake frosting caramel candy sticky sweet ooey goeey lovers whose brains short circuit at the very mention of a non-bakery conceptual scent. It also doesn't help when people with a basic sense of smell describe scents as "cologney" or "blah blah mixed with cologne" as if a) smelling like cologne is a bad thing and b)all colognes are cheap smelling and offensive. I always found calling something "cologney" or "mixed with cologne" (btw hat the hell does that mean?!) as very lazy. Anyway I digress... If, like me, you much prefer deep high end manly woodsy/herbal blends, then this bud's for you!

Fireside (200?)
smells like: a DILF butt-naked on bear-skinned rug in front of the fireplace

I'm including this one cuz a lot of people describe this as cologney due to that sexy leather note. Now this bad boi has been around for YEARS, waaaay before I became an avid BBW connoisseur. This to me is the epitome of a manly scent; woods and leather - it doesn't get more manly than that. Yet it's warm and indulgent and sensual. And it's a nice departure from all the pine and spice and mint and bakery scents that we're usually assaulted with during the holidays.

Mahogany Teakwood (2011)
similar to: A&F's Fierce
smells like: a shirtless twink at an A&F store

This is, in BBW's opinion, the most popular cologney scent ever. It's certainly one of the oldest. In 2011, BBW was testing a collection called the "Passport" collection, a higher end precursor to the Destinations. In it, there was Indian Mahogany and Bergamot..then it was changed Mahogany and Bergamot...then Mahogany Leather and then finally Mahogany Teakwood. It became a fall scent in 2012, a summer scent in 2013 and now we unfortunately see it every single season. It became Black Teakwood in the Brazil collection last spring, it was given a beach/oceany feel as Ocean Driftwood summer of '14 and now for the holidays we have an unholy blend of MT and Fresh Balsam - Mahogany Balsam. Can you say Mahogany Teakwood overload? Sadly I don't see this scent disappearing anytime soon.

Black Pepper Bergamot (2011)
similar to: there is a cologne that smells exactly like this but I don't know the name of it
smells like: how you would imagine George Clooney to smell

In the same collection marked the birth of my bae! Back then it was known as "Peruvian" Black Pepper Bergamot. The Peruvian aspect seemed to be a little too exotic for the average consumer so that was removed and was called simply Black Pepper Bergamot and eventually it would be marketed as a fall scent (there was also a version of BPB blended with rose called Passion). I have gushed over this candle for years and the fact that it hasn't returned is absolute a crime and travesty. This was one of THE BEST scents EVER - sleek, indulgent, sophisticated, sensual, inviting, warm, sexy. Simply orgasmic! *sighs

Mountain Leaves (2011)
smells like: a sexy Canadian Mountie leading you down a wooded trail..eh

This was a fall failed test scent that has completely disappeared and I don't know why..well I do know why - it's a fall scent that isn't bakery and has no cinnamon, apple or pumpkin. The closest scent that I could compare this to is The Original but this is soooooo much better and sexier. It's a brisk outdoor scent like Sweater Weather and Autumn; a little bit of earthy vetiver, some pine and just a splash of citrus. I was really hoping that Autumn Sky was this but nope. BBW really should revive this and give it a second chance.

Acorn & Figs (2011)
smells like: a farmhand ravaging you on a haystack in the stable

This was a suprisingly high end fall scent back in the day amongst all the cinnamony appley pumpkiny scents. The name was later changed to Autumn Day, was given different (and way off) notes and for awhile was a fall staple. I never cared for this one to be honest but I kept saying that I would give it a try..then it disappeared only to reappear as the newly remixed/revamped Autumn Night with added woods and smoky notes. I actually prefer Autumn Night to Autumn Day

Paris Daydream (2012)
similar to: Hugo Boss's Boss
smells like: Jean Dujardin or Maurice Chevalier in the rain

PD was part of French themed trio alongside French Garden (lavender and peach) and Lavender Market (lavender and spearmint). PD is a scent that you wanna love cuz the notes (which are always different with each appearance) sound rather lovely but after awhile you just get bored with it. It for awhile it seemed that it would never disappear. When we did get a break from, it reared its French face again as Fresh ~ Spring Blue Skies in the Happy Home collection. And if PD wasn't bad enough, we get two other PD clones including...

Oceanside (2012)
smells like: a lifeguard with too much body spray on

Oceanside is like finding a hot guy on Grindr; the picture looks good, he seems to have the qualifications of a good time but you discover all too late he's a big douchebag. The notes for (the original) Oceanside sound refreshing as hell and on cold sniff, it smells pretty darn nice. Then you light it..and you get straightup Paris Daydream. It's never been proven that one is a repackage of the other, but there's no denying the similarities. I never understood the appeal of this candle; it's not summery, it's not fresh, it's not oceany, it's not beachy.

Oakmoss & Vetiver (2012)
smells like: a guy with a faceful of lathery shaving cream in an ol school barbershop

This was part of a quartet of cologney test scents. I randomly found a 4oz of one and completely burned it down and eventually throw it away like an idiot. And now it's near impossible to find and I can't see BBW bringing it back anytime soon. This scent reminds me of Suntan/Poolside in the sense that like Suntan/Poolside smelled EXACTLY like suntan lotion, O&V smelled EXACTLY like shaving cream. And it's awkward cuz the name didn't quite match the name. It should've been called "Barbershop" or "Fresh Shave"

Whitewater Birch (2012)
similar to: Cool Waters

This was another candle in that cologney quartet. Like O&V, it would completely disappear. By all accounts, it smelled exactly like Cool Waters

Sandalwood Citrus (2012)
smells like: a butler using lemon Pledge to clean dusty wooden furniture

The third member of the quartet. It felt like for awhile BBW was really trying hard to push this scent but it just wasn't happening; it's just not that great of a scent! Even when it was given a new French makeover as Citron Cedarwood, it still wasn't flying off the shelves.

 courtesy of Littleballadeer
Sage & Cedar (2012)
smells like Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Great Gatsby"

This was the one true success of this quartet; the Justin Timberlake of this candle boyband. And like JT, it revamped it's image and became a hit. This is a true a testament to the power of marketing and renaming. As S&C, it was pretty much ignored. Then in Winter '13 it was given a new look, new wax color and more importantly a new name - Black Tie. It's been a hit ever since.

Sparkling Icicles (2012)
similar to: Giorgio Armani's Acqua di Gio
smells like: a cologne Snow Miser would use

The second Paris Daydream clone...although candle guru TTFT theorized that it was a repackage of Flirt from the Good Life aromatherapy collection back in '11 or 12(?). On the one hand, it's a nice departure from all of the stereotypical holiday scents - pine and mint etc. But there's nothing very holiday-ish about this scent at all. Yet we've seen year after year every wintertime

Villa Bergamot (2013)
similar to: Tommy Hilfiger's Tommy
smells like: a bronze hairy chested Italian man singing opera in a gandolier

This was a bit of dark horse; it (and Dolce) slipped in under the cover of night well after the other Italian Piazza scents came out. I remember hoping and praying that it would go wide nationwide and that my stores would have em. They did and I was very happy. I liked VB but didn't fall quite in love with it as I thought I would. Don't get me wrong, it was a really nice scent but it lacked a certain uumph. BBW tried to breath it new live and marketed it as a fall scent like it's brother Black Pepper Bergamot and called it Bergamot Woods. I think that name change marked its doom cuz it hasn't been seen since.

Boathouse Row (2013)
similar to: Burberry London
smells like : Benedict Cumberbatch

With the absence of BPB, I needed a new cologney scent to give me much needed life. And the candle gods blessed me with this bad boi. I remember I (and my bf) were listening to TTFT's review of this and we both said that we had to get this candle. (when TTFT said it smelled like Burberry London, my bf eventually bought that cologne and it's been one of his fav scents to wear ever since) Despite it being marketed a summer vacation by the lake in the woods scent, it was far too classy of a scent for this collection (hello Watermelon Lemonade, I'm lookin at you!) It was gave off an English vibe, it always made me think of the guards around Buckingham Palace or something equally as British) Alas, I naively thought it would come back so I didn't stock up nearly enough and, like most undercover hits, disappeared.
Flannel (2013)
smells like: Paul Bunyan

When this came out fall of 2013, no one could've convinced me that it would not only become a fan fav but a fall staple. But sure enough, that was the case - 3 consecutive years in a row. The funny thing about Flannel is that it's the only cologney scent that EVERYBODY seems to love. Most other cologney scents get a lot of hate but not Flannel. The ladies LOVE it. Personally I found Flannel odd; a weird mix of Mahogany Teakwood and Villa Bergamot with a hint of Snowed In. Meh, to each their own I guess.

courtesy of Littleballadeer

Tailgate (2013)
smells like: hot sweaty guys playing tackle football on a crisp autumn afternoon

Tailgate has the dubious honor of being my first and last test store phone order and I still kick myself for not buying more. It wasn't the best cologney scent on the market but it was definitely unique. And any scent with leather makes me tingle in the dingle. This also would've made a sexy body spray and shower gel for men cuz this scent had "DUDE" written all over. For some strange and unexplained reason, BBW brought Tailgate back in the fall '13 but it wasn't the same scent. Instead it was a repackage of Mad about Madrid which had nothing to do about guys playin football. Very LAME!

Vanilla Cedarwood (2013)
smells like: Hugh Hefner's bedroom

VC was interesting; I remember both me and my bf really liking this one though for some reason, neither of us ended up buying it. Looking back I should've at least for the sake of collecting cuz now you can't find this scent anywhere. It was a very mature old-smelling scent; it smelled like a masculine (and less pukey) smelling version of Cashmere

Great Room ~ Fireside Pine (2014)
similar to: Molton Brown's Black Peppercorn

This was part of the hoity-toity ski lodge themed Prestige Collection that many people did not get to experience. It was later repacaked as Golden Woods in the equally expensive and hoity-toity Intrigue and Opulence collection. It has recently been repackaged as the less expensive and extremely mysterious The Original.

Havana Heat (2014)
smells like: hot Cuban guy smokin a cigar in a bar in a leather chair

Tobacco is one of those fragrance notes that is super hard to sell, especially to the ladies. Immediately when you think of tobacco, you think of a stinky stogie thus having tobacco in the notes can turn people off. This was later repackaged as Ski Den ~ Leather and Sweet Tobacco and eventually just Den in the Atmosphere collection and again people weren't havin it (well that and the fact it was $30). It has recently been repackaged and is testing as Leather & Agarwood so let's see how that goes.

Mad about Madrid (2014)
smells like: what you'd imagine Zorro (or Antonio Banderas as Zorro) to smell like

This was one of many scents that I was able to order thru customer service, back when you could actually do that. I wanted to like this one but I just wasn't feeling it. My biggest issue was that the notes were so vague and I had problems trying to describe this scent. Think Villa Bergamot mixed with Black Pepper Bergamot. Sounds sexy, but it wasn't. MAM would eventually be repackaged as Tailgate, why I don't know!

Black Sands (2014)
smells like: a hot male hula dancer on the beach with waves crashing behind him

This was the token cologney scent in the Aloha Hawaii collection. There's really not much to say about it; it smells like Eucalyptus Mint & Rain with a hint of Black Tie. With it reappearance last summer, it seems destined to continue being the token cologney scent in any tropical island themed collection

Beach Day (2014)
similar to: Azzaro's Chrome
smells like: a Jersey Shore guido fratboy in swimming trunks and pooka shells fistbumpin on the beach

This was my jam and has become one of my alltime must have summer scents. There's something quintessentially beachy about this scent without a hint of mango, pineapple or coconut. To me this was so much better than Oceanside and totally could/should have replaced but it ended up falling off the face the planet.

courtesy of Kelley Wilson

Pacific Coast Highway
smells like: freshly applied deodorant on the armpit of a sweaty surfer

This was one of two failed test scents in the Coastal Cool collection; I really was hoping on the loving this one cuz the notes were right up my alley but nope! For those who never got to smell this one, fear not! It has recently been repackaged as...Winter Sun!
Autumn Sky (2014)

If this isn't one of the lamest and most forgettable scents ever, I dunno what it is! When it first came out, I was really hoping it was Mountain Leaves but nope noppitynope!

Ski Lodge (2014)
smells like: what you'd expect the inside of Genie's lamp to smell like

This was a pretty interesting fragrance that even now I don't what I think of it. I'm not a huge of fan of incense-like scents although this one wasn't so bad. I think what made me slightly unsure was almost chocolately/cocoa-like note lurking in the background. Anyhoo, we have a dramatically watered down repackage of SL as Cozy Cabin and it'll also be back as "Swiss Alps" in the Holiday Destination candles

Baltic Black Pearl (2014)

Honestly yall, I don't remember what this smells like. Despite it being a sexy sounding cologney scent, I paid little to no attention to it due to the price

Sapphire Sky (2014)
similar to: Dolce & Gabbana's Light Blue

Again, I ignored this scent because of the price. It was repackaged this fall as Lakeside Sunrise.

Be Daring (2015)
similar to: Gucci Made to Measure pour homme

I really really wanted to like this one but it was kinduva hot mess. First of all it was one of the worst performing candles ever. It would've been worthwhile if the scent blowed you away...it didn't. To me it smelled like pencil shavings and Craisins

White Sand Beaches
smells like: a white guy in Hawaii for the first time wearing linen and leis the whole time and says aloha to every Hawaiian chick he meets

This is one of those scents that sounds interesting but isn't so much once you've lit it. Totally forgettable.

Bowties & Bourbon (2015)
smells like: a seersuckered Southern gentlemen drinking a mint julep

Not since BPP and Boathouse Row have I sniffed a cologney scent that totally gave me nosegasm. I had my doubts at first but they were unfounded and it was love at first sniff. Yet again here was surprisingly high end and sophisticated manly scent amongst not very classy scents (I'm lookin at you again Watermelon Lemonade) I made sure to stock up on this one lest it doesn't come back. I hope it does; please BBW, call this whatever y'all want but bring it back!
Nantucket Sails (2015)
smells like: Leonardo diCaprio in Wolf of Wall Street on a yacht

This was a very unexciting and forgettable scent; it was essentially Black Tie with a hint of grapefruit and salt. It's"like a hot guy..wearing a black tie..eating a grapefruit...with sea salt...on a boat...in Nantucket"

Porchside Pumpkin (2015)
smells like: a hot hipster carving a pumpkin on his front porch

This was a very sophisticated and understated but unfortunately overlooked fall scent. While everybody else and their grandma was goin apeshit over Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake, Shit Cinnamon Poopkin, etc, I was losin my shit about this badboi. Unfortunately it's downfall was that it was a pumpkin scent that wasn't bakery...and the basic bitches of America wasn't havin it! It was ever so slightly Michael's craft store-ish but a little more high end. It was like a manly version of Pumpkin Carving and I loved it. Alas it has pretty much disappeared from stores and the few that are on Evilbay are super expensive. I've a feeling we are never going to see this scent again.
Peace (2015)
smell likes: how you'd hope Frosty the Snowman smelled if he hugged you

I'm gonna include this one cuz there is a manly woodsy element to it. If this was a body spray or shower gel, I would totally rock it during the winter. It's like a masculine version of Lavender Vanilla/Snow Day and I absolutely love it! Definitely a stock up/hoard scent. And everybody, men and women alike, seem to be diggin it. Will its popularity make it a winter staple and save it from being a one hit wonder (like it's brother Snow Day) and disappearing, who knows...

RANT OF THE DAY: Balsampalooza 2015

Ok, is it me or is there an overabundance of "balsam" this year? There are more scents with a balsam/fir balsam note in them than anything else and it's awfully strange. Now in the past, BBW has been read for having way too many bakery scents for the holidays (and back when I was very anti-bakery, I wholeheartedly agreed) Well after all of these years, BBW finally got the hint but ran with it to the extreme. Besides VBN and Joy, there are no bakery scents at all and instead we have a hodge-podge of random fruity or outdoorsy scents, including a crapload of balsam scents.

Welcome to BALSAMPALOOZA '15!!!!

I don't mind balsam at all but here's the problem. If all of these balsam scents were new with just a hint of balsam, that would be one thing. However all it seems like BBW is doing is simply mixing Fresh Balsam with other notes and many people have been describing these scents as such...

Alpine Cheer... Fresh Balsam and Frosted Cranberry (I personally don't get either balsam or cranberry but whatevs)

Dashing thru the Snow....Fresh Balsam with Winter esque orange

Welcome ~ Spiced Autumn Wreath/Cinnamon Pinecone... Fresh Balsam and Spiced Wreath

Mahogany Balsam - the most blatant Fresh Balsam blend of them all!

It seems like Fresh Balsam was a rolling stone and left us with several Fresh Balsam bastards!

The only piney scent without a Fresh Balsam element to it is Noel and although balsam is not listed in the notes, I'm sure there's a small hint of it in the background

And on top of all that you still have the reigning king and queen of winter holiday pine/balsam scents, Evergreen and Fresh Balsam.

Ok real talk BBW, we all realize that you guys are in a creative slump lately but you guys have to admit that this is pretty lazy even for y'all! Yes, for whatever reason, Fresh Balsam has been ridonkulously popular for many years and it just seems like utter desperation to capitalize on it's popular by creating Fresh Balsam-ish hybrids. Or maybe you guys weren't capitalizing at all and truly thought y'all were creating something unique...which to me is even more sad and pathetic!

Y'ALL DO NOT NEED FRESH BALSAM TO MAKE UNIQUE PINEY WINTER SCENTS!!!

I dont mind having a lot of piney/balsamy scents as long as they're good ones. You guys have a wide away of outdoorsy pine scents/blends in your arsenal that haven't seen the light of day in YEARS!

Holiday Pomander... Sleigh Ride... Holly Wreath... Merry Mistletoe... White Winter Petals...Snowed In...Snow Day...Frosted Tree...Apple Garland...Hello, WINTER FRIGGIN GARLAND!!!

Instead of Frankensteining "new" Fresh Balsamy, bring back some classics!!!

NEW IDEA OF THE DAY: Winter 2015 Scents (and What I'd replace them with)

Call me a Negative Nancy, but I am by and large unimpressed and underwhelmed with the holidays scents. It just seems very helter-skelter this year with more thought and effort put on the look of the candles and not the scents themselves.  Here's how I would've done all the collections

Ok let's start with these...

Cozy Cabin - why replace an original and new scent that people liked with a significantly weaker version of it?!
REPLACEMENT: Ski Lodge - HELLO?!!!

Fresh Sparkling Snow - FSS is very out of place in this collection; why have this fruity and summery mess with more outdoorsy winter scents?
REPLACEMENT: - Snowed In - now this smelled more like like fresh sparkling snow! Just fix that weird oily sage and it would be a hit

Mahogany Teakwood - MT is NOT a winter scent! I repeat, MT IS NOT A WINTER SCENT!
REPLACEMENT:  Chestnut & Clove - ok so we already had this for Thanksgiving, who cares?! Its an amazing elegant sophisticated rustic scent and it belongs with the winter scents

Salted Caramel - Granted this isn't the same gloopy ooey gooey mess that we see year after year but is it possible to have one season without ANY caramel scents?!
REPLACEMENT: Peppermint Mocha - why not have a hot winter beverage that people actually drink

Vanilla Snowflake - UGH, I'm so sick and tired of mayonaissey mess! We already saw this mess in the fall and now it's back for winter
REPLACEMENT: Snow Day/Snow & Slopes - we only had one winter season of both of these similar scents, why not bring either of these back for people to enjoy?

Winter Sun - I get where BBW was trying to go with this scent but it just kinda misses the mark
REPLACEMENT: Sparkling Icicles - SI did not belong in the Celebrations collection, very out of place. Seeing as though you actually see "sparkling icicles" outside, it belongs in this collection instead with its outdoors theme

Holiday - this scent is absolutely repulsive, I do not why they feel need to bring this back every year
REPLACEMENT:Winter Wonderland - this was a really weird scent but it's far more Christmasy than friggin Holiday

Alpine Cheer - don't get me wrong, this is a decent scent but it just isn't anything special
REPLACEMENT: Winter Garland - come the hell on BBW! Peopel have been clamoring over and begging for this candle since friggin 2011; GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT!!!!

Winter, Fresh Balsam and Frosted Cranberry can stay

Next the Holiday Traditions candles

Jingle All the Way - JATW is just wrong PERIOD end of story!
REPLACEMENT: Fresh Sparkling Snow - this scent didn't belong in that other collection at all. Its a silly scent and should be in this collection with the cartoon animals on the label

Sparkling Sugar Plum - why create a subpar "sugarplum" scent when you already had a popular "sugarplum" already in your arsenal of past scents?!
REPLACEMENT: Candied Sugar Plum - DUH!

Sweater Weather - SW is NOT  a winter scent! I repeat..SW IS NOT A WINTER SCENT!!!
REPLACEMENT: Pinecone/Autumn Snow - This poor scent has failed twice, give people a chance to finally try it. All it needs is a new fun name!

Marshmallow Fireside - I honest do not understand the appeal of this scent. A fall scent, sure but a winter scent it is not! And who the **** roasts marshmallows in winter?!
REPLACEMENT: Vanilla Spice - this was a gorgeous scent that completely fall off the face of the planet. Its a very lovely and elegant marshmallow like scent that needs to be given new life.

Vanilla Bean Noel -VBN needs to retire, like NOW!
REPLACEMENT: Winter Latte/Creamy Nutmeg - This is a far more sophisticated winter scent than VBN can ever be

Winter Candy Apple - OK, real talk...does anybody actually really like or has ever liked WAC?! And what the hell is a"winter candy apple" anyway? Who eats candy apples in winter?! Keep this shit as body care for the teenyboppers and stop making candles of it!
REPLACEMENT: Holiday Gumdrop - a sugary sweet spicy fruity scent that's inspired by any ACTUAL winter confection that people ACTUALLY eat!

Evergreen, Tis the Season, Twisted Peppermint and Dashing thru the Snow can stay! And NO Mahogany Balsam!

Now the White Barn collection

Noel - this scent is ok but it just smells a little strange, a little too plasticy for my liking
REPLACEMENT: Sleigh Ride - this is a very lovely antiquey old fashioned Old World Christmas tree scent. It was only around for one winter season back in '11, time to bring it back

Welcome - Why the HELL would you change this to Mahogany Balsam, especially since it already is in another collection?! It's not that good of a scent!
REPLACEMENT: Cinnamon Pinecone - y'all should've just left this alone

Joy - if this was the original Slatkin Marshmallow Peppermint from back in the day, that would be one thing. But instead you used this strange chocolately vanilla frosting mess instead. It smells nice but the name is misleading
REPLACEMENT: Mint Chocolate - y'all might as well have just used this. Besides it's a fair assessment to say that chocolate gives people more joy than marshmallows

Wish - I don't understand BBW's obsession with Cinnamon & Clove Buds
REPLACEMENT: Spice - The original Spice candle was a far more superior scent over C&B

Celebrate, Comfort and Peace can stay

Finally Celebration candles...

Cinnamon Caramel Swirl - I am sick and damn tired of this f***in scent! What does it have to do with anything?! Just mass appeal!
REPLACEMENT: Eggnog Cheer - Hello! A hot beverage that people actually drink at a party! Plus this scent scent hasn't been seen since 2011 and even then it was a failed scent. 2 years of CCS/PCS is enough!

Cranberry Sugar Cookie - This was only repackaged due to the seeming popularity of Cranberry Pumpkin and what the hell is a cranberry sugar cookie and what does it have to do with the holidays?!
REPLACEMENT: Pumpkin Gingerbread - this was a awesome scent (so much better than the original Frosted Gingerbread) and it's actually a treat you would see a holiday themed party!

Golden Peach Sparkle - Really BBW? Market Peach? Really? What New Years party have y'all been to wear people sit around eating peaches?!
REPLACEMENT: Peach Bellini - I'm not particularly very fond very of this scent but it at least makes more damn sense than friggin Market Peach!

Snowflakes and Spruce - Ugh, just ugh!
REPLACEMENT: White Winter Petals - This was a decent scent, it just had a very basic and generic name. Just call it "Winter Poinsettia" cuz that's what it reminded me of. Yknow, an actual holiday decoration at a party

Pomegranate Prosecco Punch - Ok real talk, what was the point of this scent?! Why throw out Cranberry Pear Bellini and replace it with a candle that sounds like and is similar to CPB?!
REPLACEMENT: Cranberry Pear Bellini - UMMM HELLO?! Winter staple since 2011!

Sparkling Icicles - Sparkling Icicles doesn't fit in this collection at all, totally misplaced!
REPLACEMENT: Merry Mistletoe - another winter staple since 2011. And seeing as though it was ridonkulously popular last year in the same New Years collection, it makes no sense for it not to return. And hello, mistletoe is a holiday decoration at parties!

Spiced Apple Toddy - Why does this Leaves knockoff return year after year after year?!! And does anyone really drink apple toddies after November?!
Holiday Pomander - this scent hasn't been seen since 2010 or 11 and I dunno why cuz it's amazing scent! It really does smell like mulled wine...much more than Wine Cellar!

Party Dress - Nothing about this scent says winter or the holidays or New Years party!
REPLACEMENT: Sensual Amber - much like Black Tie smells like a mature gentleman's cologne, SA smells like a mature madame's perfume. And the notes for Black Tie and Sensual Amber compliment each other, like a couple!( or Twinkling Night or Crimson Velvet)

Black Tie and Champagne Toast can stay

RANT OF THE DAY: The Original ~ Jar of Confusion

So as I mentioned in my last post, I received quite a substantial amount of messages on various social media from folks asking what I thought of this candle. Unfortunately I couldn't say much cuz none of my local stores had this candle to sniff. I had my theories but no solid proof...that is until I finally went to WB and sniffed and eventually bought said candle.

This mysterious candle created quite a bit of hubbub and hullabaloo on social media. It's been said that it was a repackage or at least similar my number one bae Black Pepper Bergamot. And everyone who knows me knows how much I loved it and and some folks graciously gave me a headsup about it, which is very sweet. Initially I was intrigued; hello it's a my all time favorite scent that hasn't been in rotation since '13. However part of me was a little leery and suspicious; the notes (black pepper, vetiver, pine needles) just wasn't adding up. And now having sniffed it...

OH THE SUSPENSE!!!!

The Original.... IS NOT BLACK PEPPER BERGAMOT!

It is sooooo not a repackage at all. It's not even remotely similar, not a tiny little bit. These could not be anymore different!

Here's the problem..everybody who all made these claims all had one thing in common - none of them currently OWNED a BBP (some never owned one at all) and were goin on purely scent memory. Personally out of all the people I know in the candleverse, there are only a small handful of peeps whose scent memory I truly trust...and none of them made these claims. No shade, just truth.

So you're probably wondering..well if it's not BPB, what the hell is it?! And I'll gladly tell you. It's the scent I theorized from the very beginning! People didn't wanna hear it but as it turns out, I was right!

GOLDEN WOODS!!! Need further proof?

from Ebay seller roberte518

And here are the original notes of GW...

And as it turns out, GW was a repackage of  a scent from the failed Prestige collection - Great Room ~ Fireside Pine. Look at the notes...

from Ebay sellers rew787975 and julia2868

So The Original is a repackage of Golden Woods...which was a repackage of Great Room. Now where did Great Room come from...nobody knows. Was that an old scent back in the Slatkin/White Barn New York days which prompted BBW to call this scent "The Original"? Who knows!

So now you're probably wondering what is the difference between The Original and BPB?

BPB is a very warm and cozy and inviting and high end and sensual scent. It's very much an indoors boudoir type of scent. You get a surprisingly smooth and luxurious combo of cracked black pepper that adds piquant spice and warmth along with with cologney bergamot and they're both wrapped in a warm blankety embrace of soft lavender.

The Original is the opposite! It's a very cool rugged outdoors scent; very much a wood barn or shed in the middle of nowhere in winter. It has the same brisk air feel of Autumn or Sweater Weather or Fresh Balsam. It's not inviting, it's not cozy and it certainly isn't sensual.

So what does it smell like?

The scent combo is a little weird. The black pepper isn't a warm spicy cracked pepper but more like black pepper aromatherapy essential oil. It's there to add a little umph to an otherwise very dry bland blend. The vetiver is really intense - dank, inky, earthy, grassy, earthy funk found a lot in men's cologne (and cologny BBW candles). There's a little bit of creamy aromatic sandalwood and there's another wood note that I pick up that smells sort of like sawdust or wood chips...again conjuring up the image of wood barn or shed. And finally there's pine needles but it's not fresh needles picked off the tree branch. Actually it's more like resinous pinewood or rather the oil made from it.

And there's something about this scent that smells a little soapy, like a dry bar soap for men, I was talking to TTFT and I likened this to a soap that was super popular way back in the day called LAVA  which was a very dry and rough feeling soap aimed at hardworkin men to get any grime and grit off of their hands. But on second thought what it smelled like was shower gel from a Britain based men's fragrance company Molton Brown called Black Peppercorn - the notes being obviously black pepper, coriander and vetiver...sound familiar? It's always funny how certain BBW cologney candles actually smell like a particular actual cologney scent.

In conclusion, what do I think of The Original? Real talk, I don't think I like it. It's too dull, too dry, too off. It just misses the mark of being a truly sexy cologney scent and instead smells kinda blah. It's certainly nothing exciting and is not worth the infamy it caused. And BPB is FAR more superior scent-wise. *sigh Honestly I bought this in a moment of weakness and once I was back in my sound mind at home, I found myself not enjoying it; neither did my bf. I have no desire to burn it and will most likely be bringing it back to exchange.

So there you have it. I wouldn't recommend this one at all! Unless you're an extreme collector and absolutely have to have this in your collection or you just love anything and everything cologney and woodsy, go right on ahead! Otherwise, leave it right there on the shelf!

And to this individuals originally claiming that The Original was a repackage of or similar to BPB, go stand in the corner and think about you've done!

WALK 'N' SNIFF: Holiday Candles

So my bf and I went to GSP over the weekend; of course we had to stop off at White Barn to see what we could see and smell what we could smell. Sure enough they had a good size portion of the holiday candles. *SIGH Color my ass unimpressed! I hate to be a Negative Nancy, but real talk I was already unimpressed and underwhelmed when I first heard about the holiday lineup and now having actually sniffed them, I'm that much more unimpressed and underwhelmed.

*Just a heads up, my WB (and from what I heard most other ones too) did not have Cranberry Sugar Cookie (meh), Sparkling Sugarplum (again, meh) and Dashing thru the Snow (I really wanted to sniff this one)

So there are a handful of scents that have changed since testing; the original scent wasn't up to snuff and the wise sages of the marketing department decided release a new (and more generic) safe versions for the nationwide release. The problem is who knows what version your store is gonna get; we saw this recently with Red Radiant Maple which had 3 different smelling batches. So take these with a grain of salt cuz you might have either or in your store

Golden Peach Sparkle
What others smelled: Market Peach - based on the notes it makes sense; what peaches have to do with the holidays is beyond me
What I smelled: Peach Bellini - I've talked to other people and some have smelled the same thing. I smelled heavy black currant as well as effervescence. I sniffed and resinffed and sniffed different ones - I kept getting Peach Bellini. TTFT was the same store right after I left; he said he smelled Bellini Cafe from the Italian Piazza collection in '13. I could see that but I'm leaning more towards Peach Bellini

Joy ~ Peppermint Marshmallow
What others smelled: the same Peppermint Marshmallow  from 2011
What I smelled: a generic vanilla cupcakey frosting scent with Twisted Peppermint-like mint. Think Buttercream Mint from '13. I also got a hint of cocoa which almost made think this was a repackage of Mint Chocolate; it isn't but it's very similar. TTFT and a couple of other candle buddies of mine also smelled chocolate.

Jingle all the Way
What others smelled:  Intensely candy sweet fruit blend that's very similar (apparently) to the Sheer Cotton & Lemonade body care (if that means anything to you) sans coconut
What I smelled: Straightup Oahu Coconut Sunset, which really pisses me off!  Yet another year of BBW  sneaking goddamn muthaeffin coconut in a season that it doesn't belong in!  Please explain your thought process BBW, your rationale; what made y'all think that of allllllllll things that this would make an excellent winter holiday scent. I just can't with this candle! The whole entire marketing department needs to be bitchslapped for this mess!

And as you know Welcome ~ Cinnamon Pinecone aka Welcome ~ Spiced Autumn Wreath has been changed to Mahogany Balsam which makes absolutely no F***ING  sense as it is already in another collection. I honestly do not understand why BBW is pushing Mahogany Balsam so hard cuz it ain't all that! It's very very generic and basic and smells exactly like think it would; Mahogany Teakwood mixed with a hint of a very watered down eucalyptus-less Fresh Balsam! I was hoping Cinnamon Pinecone would be a WB exclusive but nope! So if you liked that scent but preferred the look of the holiday version, you're outta luck! That said, some stores have received CP with MB labels. So sniff whats in the store and look at the wax to make sure!

And now on to the unchanged new scents...

Noel ~ Silver Pine and Cedar - I was really really hoping that this was a repackage of Sleigh Ride which made it's debut/farewell back in '11 and based on the notes, it certainly seemed like it would be. Alas, it ain't! What I think it might be is a reworking of a test scent from '13 that I'm sure nobody remembers or heard of - Frosted Pine. It's a very generic typical pine scent - think Evergreen without the clove and mint and Fresh Balsam without the apple and eucalyptus. There's a slightly medicinal gin&tonic-y juniper with a hint of rosemary that sorta amplifies the pine. All that sounds lovely and right up my alley..the problem is that the blend smells very plastic-y and it's a little offputting. It's like a generic pine candle that you found at TJMaxx/Marshalls/Homegoods and has been siting in your attic wrapped in old dusty bubblewrap. In addition to the waxy/plastic-iness, it smells ancient and dusty and not in a good way. With the surprising array of pine/balsam scents this year, I don't really see the point of this scent at all; they really should've used Sleigh Ride instead.

Peace ~ Iced Vanilla Woods - This one is sooooo weird...and I love it! Now bear with me cuz this candle is very hard to describe. At first I thought this was a repackage of a long forgotten Slatkin scent called Lavender Market, which was lavender and spearmint...NOPE! I also kinda hoped that it was Oakmoss & Vetiver..close but no cigar. What it actually smells similar to is...what for it..SNOW DAY! Think Snow Day but as a man's fragrance. So you get the same sweet Twisted Peppermint-esque vibe, spruce and maybe a little sandalwood. That said, I don't know if there's actually mint in this but there's there's no denying there is an underlying mint like action...which could just be from the lavender which is actually a member of the mint family..and there is definitely a herbal lavender in this. So initally I wrote this off as Snow Day mixed with Oakmoss & Vetiver however I kept smelling something fruity..but not a juicy fruity note but rather a man's fragrance fruity, like a body spray. At first I thought maybe Be Daring but IG buddy @whitebarncandlefan totally called it - Oceanside. There's a weird dry fruity manly smell that you get at the very very end that hangs out to party at the top of your nose. So yeah Snow Day + Oakmoss & Vetiver + Oceanside = Peace. Like I said, it's weird but it's sooooo good!

Snowflakes and Spruce - OY..VEY... talk about going downhill..YIKES!!! This is without a doubt one of the most repugnant and repulsive scents that I ever had the extreme displeasure of sniffing. I was really wishing and hoping and praying that this would be Snow Day or Snow and Slopes..A BIG OL NOPE TO THAT. Then I thought maybe Frosted Pine - pine and sugar..again, NOPE! What it is is an unholy blend of a vaguely vanilla-ish note and a vaguely pine-ish note and the combo just smells all kinds of wrong. And the blend as a whole just smells really waxy - imagine if you will pine scented/flavored Burt's Bees chapstick. Now let's backtrack..notice I prefaced the description notes with the word "vaguely" The vanilla isn't exactly vanilla (more floral) and the pine or rather spruce isn't exactly piny/sprucey, just vaguely green. A couple of people I talked to reported that this smelled strangely tropical, possibly a scent from the old Aloha Hawaii candles. Then it hit me..Rainforest Sugarcane. I had that candle back in the day and I even described it as having a green note that smelled piney. I'm not 100% sure but it might be a reworking of that. Anyhoo, this scent is just straightup bizarre - avoid it all costs!

Pomegranate Prosecco Punch - Many people have said that was a dupe of this fall's Sparkling Riesling...they're half right. It's basically 30% Sparkling Riesling and 70%..CRANBERRY PEAR BELLINI. I think the only difference is that this really sweet and doesn't have the tartness of CPB. You get the blackcurrant that's present in all of the winter bubbly cocktail scents,  syrupy white grape juice and intensely sweet pear. And it's very fizzy. I don't really understand why this scen exists; y'all have a scent that has been insanely popular since 2011 and yet y'all replace it with a scent that smells vaguely similar?

Be Joyful - I've said it before and I'll continue to keep saying it - I LOATHE candles based on bodycare; they never smell 100% right and they always (with very few exceptions) smell basic. And this one is no exception. It's definitely a pink girly-girl coochie scent - a spritz of orange juice/zest, powdery jasmine, something watery like some kind of melon maybe and the note that's found in practically every women's bodycare - amber. It's not very wintery to me and I don't think it belongs in this collection at all.

and finally...

The Original - I have gotten sooooooooooooooooooooo many messages on here and IG and Youtube and my personal email about what I thought of this candle. I had my theory but people didn't wanna hear it. Now I've smelled it and have it in my possession..AND I WAS RIGHT!!!! Wanna know what it is?! Wait for my next blog post and Youtube video!

CANDLE SPOTLIGHT: Harvest Gathering 2015

Products: candle and wf bulbs
Area used in:  living room
Time Period: mid-October - Thanksgiving

Description: Transport yourself to a hilltop winery during harvest with a blend of cinnamon leaves, crisp apple and touch of tart cranberry

Missing note: pumpkin

Trivia: this first appeared out of nowhere late in fall of 2013 and was named "Harvest Gathering No. 4"

I'll be honest, I flatout ignored this scent for the longest! With such vastly superior fall scents like Leaves and Pumpkin Carving and Cranberry Woods, I just didn't see the need for HG. I pretty much wrote this scent off as a generic knockoff of Leaves from a low-tier candle company that you find at Target or Marshalls. Had my bf not sniffed this in the store and expressed some interest, I probably would've continued ignoring it. But as I said in my last candle review, I've been trying to be open-minded and branch out and so here we are.

Performance-wise, it was kinduva hot mess. The flames were wimpy and stubby and it was a crapshoot as to whether it would fully pool out or not. It canyoned a handful of times and left cliffs of hard wax on the sides. Twice I even had to to do the infamous cottonball trick (I've had to do that with my Leaves too) which I haven't had to do in ages. Its past mid-range at this point and it seems to have corrected itself. Throw-wise, it's medium-ish; on scale of 1 to 10, it's about a 6 maybe 5 3/4. Same with the wf bulbs, they're medium-ish.

And now on the scent. In the past, I wrote this off as being a mix Leaves and Pumpkin Carving with a hint of Cranberry Woods and I still sort of stand by that. The overall blend just seems to be a hodge-podge of generic "autumn" notes. You get a generic red apple note a la Leaves and a sharp cinnamon bark note a la Cranberry Woods. There is some cranberry but there is neither any juiciness or tartness that you would associate with the fruit; it's almost similar to the cranberry in Cranberry Pumpkin - an artificially sweetened dried Craisin. And though it is no longer mentioned for whatever reason, there is definitely pumpkin which adds a deep and almost dark earthiness. Overall, it is a little craft store-smelling, a little Michael's-ish, and kinda generic fall poutpourri-like.

HG isn't a bad scent by any means but it is far exciting. I don't really know why this fall BBW decided to place it in the Cork & Vine collection (and I'm torn about the green color) cuz it doesn't fit; it should've been in one of the fall collections cuz it is very much a fall scent! Anyway, I'm neither blown away or in candle love nor have I seen the errors of my ways for underestimating HG however I have come to appreciate it. Despite it being very generic, it does capture the essence of fall and the autumn harvest albeit in a dull and cliched manner - I mean you can't get more more fall-ish than apple, cinnamon, cranberry and pumpkin. Still this is a "nice" scent - it's safe, it's unassuming, it's guest-friendly. If it were to disappear, I certainly wouldn't be upset. For the moment, I appreciate it for a what it is - a nice, calm, unassuming fall scent.
