DROPPIN CANDLE KNOWLEDGE: Bronzeblogger's Birthday & Top 10 Fallgasmic Candles
Well my dears, today is my birthday! Where my Virgos at?! Even though it won't technically be fall until about 2 weeks from now, I still consider myself a fall baby. I go into full on hardcore full steam ahead ballstothewall basic bitch mode as soon as September hits, regardless of the weather and climate. Even back when I was still living in New Orleans where fall just doesn't exist, I was still getting my basic bitchery on...and I had BBW to thank for it. It was really fall 2012 when my obsession for BBW grew; it was during this time that I really started paying more attention to the candles in the stores in general and realized just how awesome the candles were in the fall. And all of the these amazingly fallgasmic scents more me, for the first time, really appreciate fall for the magical season it is - I've been an ardent autumnophile ever since, thanks to BBW.
Anyhoo, it's usually around my birthday that starts fall for me - that's usually when I have my first PSL from Starbucks, I'll start slowly putting out my fall decor, and I'll commence with what I call "the changing of the bulbs" and plug in my fall wallflower refills and I sort out my fall candles, particularly the woods I'm gonna this year.
All that said, I thought it would be fun to talk about my fav fall scents from fall years that really get into the autumn spirit.
10. Cranberry Pumpkin
This is just Thanksgiving in a jar - for me it conjures images of cornucopias, pumpkin centerpieces, pumpkin pies, jiggling canned cranberry dressings, etc. It's a perfect blend of two late fall staples - pumpkin and cranberry with a little hint of apple and a dash of spice. It is an absolute crime that BBW has never brought this back to be a fall staple and allowed it to remain a one hit wonder.
9. Porchside Pumpkin
Peep this... a pumpkin scent...THAT'S NOT BAKERY!!! Mindblowing, right?! Aaand. wait for it....NO CINNAMON! Crazy talk, sheer and utter madness but here we are. Alas, because it was not bakery, PP was very much overshadowed and overlooked and it hasn't been seen since. That whole fall season, I saw it in my store once and never again so I was very lucky to snag one. I'm always here for a mandle, even if it's pumpkin-y.
8. Pumpkin Patch/Carving
THE ULTIMATE, QUINTESSENTIAL AND PERFECT PUMPKIN SCENT. Why BBW persists on treating it like a red-headed stepchild in favor of Shit Cinnamon Poopkin that shove down our throats at every turn is beyond me.
7. Spiced Pumpkin Cider
At first glance, this scent seems really basic, non-offensive and innocuous...and it was. And at the time, it was a little unnecessary and superfluous as we had the (now completely forgotten) Spiced Cider . That said, it felt new and unlike anything we all sniffed before and it was actually a good scent that I found myself thoroughly enjoying. I made the mistake of only buying one as I assumed it would be back...this was backintheday where new scents more often than not did return the following year. Yeah, it didn't; it would be one of many scents that year left to linger in one hit wonder purgatory
6. Peppered Plum
O.M.G....THIS GODDAMN MUTHA-EFFIN CANDLE! FALLGASMIC AND NOSEGASMIC! Out of nowhere and unprovoked, BBW created this thing of olfactoral beauty! First of all, a fall scent that captures the beauty of fall without apple, cranberry, pumpkin and/or cinnamon is rare AF! Also it was just so elegant and upscale...a little too elegant and upscale for BBW as they didn't know how to market it and it was shelved and eventually forgotten...and it's both damn shame and travesty.
5. Pumpkin Clove
When I first about this scent, I was fully prepared to give any sufficient amount of s***s about it. First of all, a pumpkin scent for fall...groundbreaking. Plus the name was boring and the notes were generic. Man did this candle prove me wrong! Not only did I find myself enjoying it immensely, it became both a fall fav but it found a place in my top 10.
4. Sweater Weather
Who would've thought backintheday that this former failed test scent(yes this candle failed when it first came out in 2012) that this would be a fan fav for several years. It's also surprising that a non-bakery, outdoorsy and borderline manly HERBAL forward/heavy/based scent would become and continue to be so popular. And much like the aformentioned Peppered Plum, this captures the essence of autumn with no trace or hint apple-cinnamon or pumpkin spice. Back when I was still living in New Orleans, SW always made the think of walking thru Central Park on cool brisk autumn afternoon and now having actually done it, my opinion hasn't changed.
ADDENDUM: I do wish they would stop marketing this as a winter scent
3. Cranberry Woods
This candle continues to stand the test of time. This, Autumn and Leaves (the holy trinity of fall) have been since at the mid 2000s and there still around for old and new fans to enjoy. Believe it or not, I was first acquainted with this badboi before my eventual fall bae Leaves and for hot sec actually preferred this over Leaves..blasphemy I know, but the truth. As a lover of all things cranberry, it was a nice change from all of the spiced ciders and caramel apples and pumpkin spices would normally get. Furthermore, unlike the majority of BBW's fall scents, I felt (and still kinda do) that CW is quite versatile; while I'm of the opinion this is a mid to late fall scent, you could start burning this very early on in September, it makes a lovely Halloween time scent, it's great for Thanksgiving and you could take on thru Christmastime. I do wish BBW hadn't both watered it down and screwed with the formula; the cranberry juice-like mess we have today is far cry from the amazing blend it was a few years ago.
2. Apple Crumble
BBW has done this candle dirty! They continue to sell the duo pack of wallflowers online but refuse return the candle itself and an adjacent refill/bulb in actual collection; it hasn't been in one since 2012! It did randomly appear the following year for Summer SAS as part of a promotion; thank goodness I had the presence of mind and forethought to stock cuz if I didn't, I would never see it again. I'm not sure why BBW was and still is so indifferent of AC because it's a damn good scent. I would even argue to say that it's one of the best and most authentic bakery as well apple-cinnamon based scents that BBW has ever created
1. Leaves
Ah Leaves! The ultimate scent! Say it with me.... "fall in a jar" The grand poobah of the fall scents! The real OG nad MVP! It's just not fall with Leaves! I have my bf to thank as Leaves is one of my favorites and it was him who first introduced me properly to it...and it was love at first sniff! I have been actively burning Leaves every single blessed fall ever since. So many fall scents have come and gone but Leaves have remained since the 2000s so that should serve as a testament to how awesome this scent is. I can't even fathom BBW not releasing Leaves anymore and if they did, it would truly be the end of an era.
And now, here are some honorable mentions...
