THIS IS THE BOMB.COM: Pumpkin Carving 2015

Products: candle
Area used in:  living room (decoration in guest bathroom)
Time Period: whenever (my official Halloween candle)

Description: Invite everyone over to enjoy the fun fragrance of making jack-o-lanterns in a blend of pumpkin, glittering brown sugar and nutmeg

Missing notes: whipped butter, vanilla cream

Trivia: was known as The Perfect Autumn Pumpkin circa 2006ish, was changed to Pumpkin Patch around 2010ish and then to Pumpkin Carving in 2012 which was released  only as a 4oz as free with purchase deal

With tomorrow being All Hallow's Eve, I couldn't think of a better candle to review. Now as y'all know, due to an unfortunate run-in with Shit Cinnamon Poopkin, I developed an intense dislike of pumpkin scents. And while everyone has raved about this particular candle for years and swear by it's superiority to SCP, I just couldn't make myself like PC. Back in 2013 when it made it's full debut, I tried getting over my pumpkin phobia and bought and used several PC wf bulbs, sort of dipping my toe into the low end of the pool. I enjoyed the wf bulbs but I just couldn't commit to buying and burning a candle of it. Fast forward to this year with PC making a surprise appearance for Halloween. I've been really trying to branch out and be more open-minded (especially with pumpkin scents) so when I saw this, I decided to take the plunge and try it out...and I'm glad I did.

As ya'll can see from the picture above, this candle performed FLAWLESSLY. Even though it had the weird wicks that curl over that BBW insists on using this year, the flames were ridonkulously high and the pool ridonkulously deep. I think I took this picture after a 2 hour-ish burn. And it threw super far; living room and kitchen was filled with instant pumpkiny goodness. That said, it wasn't choke you out KO strong; it had what I like to call a "warm blanket" that just wraps around and envelops with warm cozy feeling.

The wf bulb is super strong and smells amazing; I usually have it in my spare bathroom. This year I have Heirloom Pumpkin in my bathroom which smells exactly the same (although I swear the candle smells slightly different)

There's really not much to say about the scent cuz it's pretty straightforward. You get a deep earthy pumpkin note; you smell the almost waxy rind as well as the meat of the pumpkin. It's like you roasted the pumpkin in the oven and are about sweeten/season the meat to puree. It's not heavily spiced which is great cuz BBw can be a little bit heavy handed with the cinnamon cough cough * Shit Cinnamon Poopkin. The only spice you get as an intense almost nutty nutmeg note which blends beautifully with the brown sugar note; I love nutmeg and brown sugar smell together in real life and in home fragrance. You also get a rich but not overly sweet vanilla, think vanilla extract. The original notes from back in the day mentioned butter, I totally get that; there's something that makes this scent very creamy and whipped and smooth with maybe the tiniest hint of salt. Overall it smells freshly made warm pumpkin puree whipped with butter and sweetened with vanilla and brown sugar as well as spiced with nutmeg and is ready to make a homemade pie with.

I think PC has cured my pumpkin phobia. That said, I don't know not why BBW insists on shoving SCP in our faces at every given turn cuz PC is obviously superior. Like Leaves and Sweater Weather and Cranberry Woods, there is just something quintessentially fall-ish about this scent; it totally captures late autumn and is a perfect scent for Halloween straight on til Thanksgiving. And I will admit, I was kinda seduced and beguiled by this year's packaging...although the 2013 version was pretty darn cute as well. Anyway, I've really grown to like this scent; it took me awhile but I'm finally onboard. I do wish it stays around as the official Halloween candle.

That said, I hope all of y'all have a very happy (and safe) Halloween!!!!

CANDLE SPOTLIGHT: Cranberry Pumpkin

Products: candle and wf bulb
Area used in:  candle in living room (on weekends), wf bulb in guestroom
Time Period: mid-October - Thanksgiving

Description:Fresh from the patch, pumpkin blends with tart cranberry in a fragrance that brings the best of fall into your home

When I first smelled this scent, I was blown away and it thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. I just knew it was going to be my new fall jam so I bought it. But after bringing home and sniffing it and resniffing it and finally burning it, I'm not nearly as blown away as I once was.

Performance-wise, CP was pretty perfect. It did have those new craptastic wicks that BBW is using recently that curl after being lit and has white crap on the tips however the candle still had high dancing flames and the pool melted nice and evenly. The throw is medium-strongish; I'd describe it as a "warm blanket" throw. It filled my living room and kitchen without choking me out and scent lingered for hours afters I blew the candle out. The wf bulb is super strong, stronger than the candle. As soon as I plugged it in, I got instant fragrance that filled the entire room. And, as is more often the case, the wf bulb's fragrance just seemed better blended than the candle.

And now let's talk about the scent. It's very similar to Blueberry Pumpkin Patch; they're like brother and sister. They both share a sweet and not overly tart berry note mixed with a so-called "pumpkin" note that comes across more bakery. The cranberry note isn't as sweet and juicy as Cranberry Woods nor is it as tart and sour as Frosted Cranberry but somewhere in between. And like it's brother BPP, the berry note smells almost dried, like a bag of Craisins. Again, like BPP, you get an earthy slightly spiced pumpkin note that smells more bready than pumpkiny. That said CP smells less like a cranberry and pumpkin and more like a cranberry muffin or bread.

This isn't a bad scent at all; in fact I daresay it's one of the best scents in the fall lineup and one of the truly NEW ones. But I can't help feeling just a teeny bit disappointed. Again here is yet another "pumpkin" scent that doesn't smell like pumpkin and I'm really getting tired of it; the pumpkinless "pumpkin" trend needs to stop NOW! If this was called "Cranberry Muffin" or even "Cranberry Pumpkin Bread" and marketed as a fall bakery treat instead of a pumpkin scent, I would be less annoyed. And the fact that it has now been repackaged as "Cranberry Sugar Cookie" in the upcoming holiday lineup further proves the point that there is nary any pumpkin in this damn candle! And what the hell does this scent have to do with Christmas/New Year's party?!

Anyway, rant aside, CP is a pleasant enough scent; there is something quitessentially fall-ish and autumnal about it (CP IS NOT A DAMN WINTER SCENT BBW). It's a nice fall morning/early afternoon scent as well as a nice candle burn on Thanksgiving. I think it's a welcome addition to the fall collections this year and I hope it returns in the future as a fall staple...just under a different name!

CANDLE RETROSPECTIVE: Leaves ~ Fall in a jar

Ah Leaves... Wonderful, beautiful, marvelous Leaves!

Leaves have certainly stood the test of time. It's been around for many years and have had many different looks. And in a time where many Slatkin era scents are quickly disappearing and falling out of stock, Leaves continues to be perpetual fan favorite.

Despite it being around for quite some time, I didn't discover the wonder and grandeur of Leaves until 2012. My partner had a 2011 version (the 4th one in the picture) and a surplus of bulbs hidden away and I found them while cleaning. All it took was one sniff and I was instantly smitten - FALLGASM. Since then, it has become an absolutely must have every single blessed fall. I usually have Leaves out from September thru October; sometimes I'll start burning and plugging directly on Autumnal equinox or, like this year, the butt end of August/beginning of September. It is the one candle I can't help anticipating to burn cuz once it's lit, fall can officially begin. In my opinion, Leaves IS fall PERIOD!

Now believe it, there are some people out there who don't share the ardent love and appreciation for Leaves. I daresay there are actually some individuals who consider Leaves sub par and are of the opinion that there are better suited scents for fall...like Leave's fated more outdoorsy and rustic rival, Autumn.

*I had a funny thought while writing this. Leaves is the basic bitch in long sweaters, leggings and Uggs Instagramming her upteenth Pumpkin Spice Latte of the day and Autumn is her hipster lumbersexual brother in his plaid shirt, skinny jeans and Doc Martens downing a bottle of Angry Orchard on his way to buy organic moustache and beard oil.*

I've heard this statement\argument dozens of times from reviewers... "...Leaves and Autumn should switch names cuz Autumn smells more like leaves and Leaves smells more like autumntime..."

No bitches...just no!!!

Autumn is supposed to capture the outdoorsiness of fall, like a brisk walk thru an orchard. That's why it has the fruit notes as well as well as woodsy notes and why it's so fresh and crisp.

Now granted, Leaves doesn't smell like leaves...it's not supposed to! (And who in their right mind would want a candle that smells like wet moldy dead leaves anyway) Now this is just a theory but I believe the reason the Great and Powerful Slatkin named his scent Leaves is because he wanted to capture the look of leaves in fall. In other words, he picked notes that matched the colors of fall foliage...

RED apples
CRIMSON berries
GOLDEN nectar
TAN cider
ORANGE mandarin
BROWN cinnamon

All of the notes are colors of fall foliage - LEAVES!!!

Again this is only a theory but I wouldn't put it past the genius of Slatkin to go that route with this scent

That said, stop saying the two scents should switch cuz they shouldn't!

Oh Leaves, I will continue to defend your honor from the naysayers and basic haters. I eternally pledge my love to thee!

NEW IDEA OF THE DAY: Thanksgiving candles (and what Id replace em with)

So the Thanksgiving candles  are (or should be) already in stores...yyyeeahhh. Is it just me or does this collection seem random as hell?! Just random scents haphazardly thrown together with very little thought or reason. I thought about this collection and came up with replacement scents that just makes more sense.

Cheers - So as you know this is Wine Cellar\Smoked Berries & Incense. This isn't that great of a scent and doesn't smell like wine, mulled or otherwise, at all
REPLACEMENT: Spiced Pumpkin Cider - this was a new and popular scent last fall so it boggles my mind that it wasn't brought back this fall (or any cider scent for that matter). SPC just makes sense; cider is an autumnal beverage and the pumpkin and mulling spices makes it very Thanksgiving-y. Mulled wine to me is more of a winter beverage and as for the candle, it smells more like mulled perfume than mulled wine

Or : Pumpkin Caramel Latte - seeing as though this oddly this didn't see the light of day this year (despite being a fall staple for the past 6 years) due to "production issue", you would think it would be nice for it to finally be available for it fans. PCL again makes more sense than Wine Cellar

Home - I am not a fan of  Pumpkin Spiced Cheesecake aka Brown Butter Praline. I bought it and gushed about it but the more I sniffed it, the more I started to dislike it. I havent burned it and I plan on returning and exchanging it. Anyhoo, to me PSC doesn't conjure warm cozy memories of home; its not a comforting and cozy scent at all
REPLACEMENT: Home ~ Sweet Caramel Comfort - HELLO the name says it all. I know BBW chose PSC because of the " pumpkin" aspect thus it has a "Thanksgivingy" vibe. However the original Home aka Caramel Apple is far more warm and cozy and comforting and inviting. It has that "wrapped in a warm blanket" appeal that PSC simply doesn't have.

Feast - generic..generic...GENERIC! I am sick to damn death of straight up caramel scents. No substance, just mass appeal for the sake of being mass appeal. And who eats brittle on Thanksgiving?!

REPLACEMENT: Pumpkin Pie - Come on, it is simply not Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie!

Gather - this made me facepalm a hole in my skull! I mean wtf?! What made BBW think that this was a good idea?!!

REPLACEMENT: Harvest Gathering - this makes waaayyyy more sense! It was a stupid idea to put HG in the Cork & Vine collection ; it should've been in one of the real fall collections

OR: Butternut Squash - y'know, pumpkin or gourds
OR: Toffee Glazed Popcorn - if you guys at BBW are deadset on the Indian maize label, at least TGP is popCORN!!!

Harvest, Thankful and Welcome can stay

And now the bougie chunky leaves 12oz'ers. Personally if I had a say in the marketing, I wouldve done away with these except for Cranberry Woods and placed that with the regular Thanksgiving candles..which makes sense as there is a Cranberry Woods wallflower as "Harvest". But if BBW insisted on keeping these.....

Pecan Pumpkin Waffles - I am not a fan of this scent at all and personally I dont think it fits; Leaves, SCP and CW are all conceptual scents as opposed to a foodie/bakery scent. I feel like PPW was added strictly for mass appeal
REPLACEMENT: Nutmeg and Spice - Im shocked that this has disappeared cuz it was a very popular scent. I wasn't particularly very fond of it however it appreciated the fact that it was sweet without being cloying and despite what notes suggested, it was a very sophisticated...way more than PPW.

Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin....  no comment
REPLACEMENT: Heirloom Pumpkin/Pumpkin Carving - everyone knows that HP/PC is the supwrior pumpkin scent; for the life of me, I continue to not understand why BBW insists on constantly throwing Shit Cinnamon Poopkin in our faces!

Leaves and Cranberry Woods can stay

WALK 'N'SNIFF: Thanksgiving Collection

So I was in the city running errands and to kill some time, I went to the two BBWs in the city to see if they had the Thanksgiving candles and sure enough they did!

So I'm not gonna waste your time and mine talking about Cheers ~ Mulled Wine and Gather ~ Marshmallow Fireside cuz as yall already know they're both Wine Cellar and..well..Marshmallow Fireside (which I still say doesn't make an ounce of sense) respectively

Welcome ~ Autumn Spiced Wreath - So it has been confirmed that this is a repackage of Welcome ~ Cinnamon Pinecone in the WB Holiday collection. Kinda odd that BBW is selling a repackage of a scent thats gonna be in stores in another month but whatever. Anyhoo, there's really not much too say about this one; it basically smells like Fresh Balsam with a hint of cinnamon. It's like Fresh Balsam mixed with Spiced Wreath from 2013...which was a very lame scent that basically smelled like Holiday without that musty dusty bergamot note. Anyhoo, Welcome is nice and I get where BBW was going with this scent - cinnamon scented potpourri pinecones and brooms..but man that balsam action is KILLER! It just smells too much like FB. I'm not entirely sure if I like it.

Feast ~ Maple Sugar Brittle - this just smells so awfully generic to me; it's like every other caramel/toffee/butterscotch scent that BBW has ever had on the market. To me it's like Bourbon  Butterscotch  with Hot Buttered Rum; it's nauseatingly sweet and cloying and ooey gooey; diabetes in a jar. I don't get maple nor do I get almond.

Thankful ~ Chestnut & Clove - OMG...OMG!!! When I heard this was coming back, I'm almost peed on myself! This is the first and only candle in probably over a year that I have been legitimately excited for! C&C is my jam!!!! A little weird that it's being marketed as a Thanksgiving scent but hey whatever, I'm just glad it's back. Funny thing is this scent was pretty much ignored and overlooked for years. I overlooked it until I happened to really sniff it back in '13 and I was hooked. It's so cozy yet so sophisticated and elegant. It's creamy and sweet with a little spice without being bakery yet woodsy and piney without smelling cologney or Fresh Balsamy. Here's my review of it from '13

And now the fancy bougie candles...

As y'all already know Leaves, Cranberry Woods, Pumpkin Pecan Waffles and (my nemesis) Shit Cinnamon Poopkin are in this collection. I won't go into detail about these cuz everybody and their grandma already know what these smell like. However do permit me to rant..

Now folks... cough cough basic bitches...have been oh'ing and ah'ing over these damn candles on social media. All I have to say is don't believe the hype! Anything looks nice and pretty with an Instagram filter on it.. cough cough Kim Kardashian. As is often the case, IRL they're are not all that nice looking in person and these candles are no exception. They have a weird frosty yet almost iridescent metallic look to them which sounds nice but in person they just look cheap and not worth the added $2.00. I don't really see the point of them as 3 of them are already in the fall collections. Moreover I don't understand why Cranberry Woods was sold under a new name (Harvest) as a wf bulb but not as a candle under said same name. And as much as I love CW, I refuse to buy the chunky clunky 12 oz version of it just out of spite. It's just the principle of the thing - no lid, less wax, more expensive. No maam!!!

WALK 'N' SNIFF: Cozy Cabin, Winter Sun, Alpine Cheer

So yesterday I was running around Manhattan like Usain Bolt looking for costume stuff for Halloween. Since I was in the area to step a nearby and see what newness it had in store, it had these 3 candles

Cozy Cabin - This one kinda snuck in outta nowhere. Based on the notes, I thought for sure that this would be Black Tie but I was told on IG that its actually Ski Lodge. I didn't wanna believe but alas after finally sniffing it, it is indeed Ski Lodge but way toned down. And note-wise, it makes sense

Smoky vanilla is now "iced" vanilla... Whatever that means
Deep green cypress is sage
Rich agarwood has been dummified as "warm woods"

You guys simplifying and dummifying your notes for the basics dontcha?!

This repackage kinda makes sense...although its also been repackaged as Swiss Alps in the Holiday edition Destination collection. Two Ski Lodges at the same time back to back! Ski Lodge is good but not that damn good!

Anyhoo, CC is LIGHT, so light it's borderline nonexistant. You gotta really huff it with all of your might to get any fragrance and according to Tinadivalicious, it's even worse once lit.

Winter Sun - there has been much outrage and indignation against this candle; it stinks, it's disgusting, it's weird, it doesn't fit in this collection, it's not a winter scent and so on and soforth. After sniffing it for myself, in my most humble opinion, it's not nearly as bad as people on social media are making it out to be. That said, it's a pretty strange one and when I sniffed it in the store, it reminded me of an old scent but I couldn't think of what it was. Then one of IG buddies totally called it - Pacific Coast Highway , failed test test from the Coastal Cool collection. It makes sense cuz both scent are very heavy on the vetiver; I remember not really liking PCH thinking it smelled like freshly applied deodorant on a musty armpit. WS is definitely a repackage with a twist; the only difference is WS has an intense Coastal Sun-esque citrusiness which a)doesn't blend well with the hearty earthy vetiver notes and b)makes this smell more summery than wintery. I get where BBW was going with this scent but it totally missed the mark. To me, WS smells like a dentist with too much cologne in freshly Cloroxed/Lysoled/Pinesoled office.

Alpine Cheer - This is by far the best scent in this collection and has been the cause of much debate amongst BBW enthusiasts. Some people, myself included, was hoping and wishing and praying this was a repackage of the best Christmasy scent from the Slatkin era, Winter Garland. Unfortunately, it isn't but it's a close second. I also thought it could be Apple Spruce/WB Christmas 2012/Apple Garland; fortunately it isn't, I did not like that scent at all - AC is so much better. A few people surmised that it could be Alpine Frost  from last year..close but no cigar; AC is too intensely fruity to be that one. The closest scent that it's similar to is actually Merry Mistletoe. Think a sweeter and fruitier MM. It has a sharp yet surprising balsam in the background yet it's not nearly as intense as Fresh Balsam. There also may be a bit of spruce a la MM or Snow Day. I don't really get too much cranberry but what I do get is orange/clementine. I also get..wait for it...pineapple! Tinadivalicious said it in his review and I thought he was nuts! But sure enough, I totally smelled it! Now don't get scared of by any of this - it doesn't smell nearly as sickeningly cloyingly sweet as it sounds and unlike, Jingle all the Way or Winter Sun, it doesn't feel out of place and summery; it's definitely a wintery "alpiney" scent. I like this scent a lot and is one of the few holiday candles I plan on buying.

While AC appears to be new, it definitely smells like an old scent; its very familiar smelling and for the life of me, it can not think of what it could be!

NEWNESS UPDATE & RANT OF THE DAY: Thanksgiving Collection *UPDATED*

Thought you were done with new candles? Think again! We have more scents comin our way...very sneaky BBW.

First off,  a new candle in the Holiday Traditions collection has been making random appearances on Instagram - Cozy Cabin. The notes are iced vanilla, sage and warm woods; that said, it sounds suspiciously like Black Tie but in actuality it is..wait for it... Ski Lodge! Sooo we'll have Ski Lodge twice back to back this winter as Cozy Cabin and Swiss Alps...umm dafuq?!

There's also a new candle in the Celebrations called "Be Joyful" which I believe is also body care... I HATE candles based off body care!!!! The notes are shimmering sugar, sparkling clementine and frosted jasmine. Teeny bopper cutesy cutesy girly girl teeny pink coochie scent...NEXT!!!!

And now on to the real deal, the Thanksgiving collection. They have single holiday themed names like the Christmasy White Barn candles and the labels kinda look an autumnal version of the Garden Party candles from back in the day. A couple of them have appeared online already (and more will appear in the next couple of days most likely), so go take a gander if you haven't already. In this collection we have...

Cheers ~ Mulled Wine aka Wine Cellar/Smoked Berries & Incense

Harvest ~ Cranberry Woods (omg, yay!!! FINALLY!!!)

Home ~ Pumpkin Cheesecake

Welcome ~ Autumn Spiced Wreath aka Welcome ~ Cinnamon Pinecone

Feast ~ Maple Sugar Brittle (some say this smells like Salted Caramel, some say Sea Salt & Maple Popcorn, some Bourbon Butterscotch , some say Hot Buttered Rum)

Thankful ~ Chestnut & Clove (y'all, I lost my shit when I saw this! Chestnut & Clove is my Christmas jam!!!)

and finally...

Gather...I wanna take a moment to talk this sonuvabitch

Just based on the name you might think Harvest Gathering. Nope! The label has Indian maize corn on it and the wax color is a pretty fall-ish goldenrod color so you would think maybe fresh corn or candy corn scent. Nope!!! Maybe Salted Caramel Corn..which was basically Salted Caramel. Or maybe Sea Salt and Maple Popcorn? Or Toffee Glazed Popcorn from back in the day? Or maybe a conceptual scent like Pumpkin Hayride that had a slightly spicy wet hay/corn husk and stalk like aroma? NOPE! You give up?!

MARSHMALLOW F***ING FIRESIDE?!!!

Let it sink in and marinate...a candle named "GATHER" with corn on the label and a goldenrod wax color...is Marshmallow Fireside!!!

Really BBW?!! I dunno if y'all are just completely pandering to the basic bitches of America and/or y'all are in a creative slump and out of fresh new ideas or y'all are just be lazy but this is just downright PATHETIC!!!!

Ohhh and it's gets better!!!

Alongside these candles are 4 fall classics - Leaves, Cranberry Woods, Pumpkin Pecan Waffles and the herpes of fall scents, Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin. They all come in seemingly thick colored tumblers with molded leaves/stalks on them. People on social media lost their proverbial shit over these!!!

"Omg these are sooooo beautiful!!! I am soooo getting these!!! I'm gonna get these just for the tumblrs!!!"

Here's the problem...

  1. They're 12oz, so less than your usual 14.5oz 3 wick.
  2. There are no lids despite the major outcry about that
  3. They're 24.50
Soooo there's less wax than a 14.5 ozer so it's gonna burn down that much more quicker aaaand there are no lids, so the oils are gonna evaporate over time and the scent throw will get weaker aaaannnnd they're more expensive just because of the jars

Yet and still, people are losing their mind over them. And it's these individuals to whom BBW is currently catering to - people who care more about shiny glittery cute labels and decorative lids and fancy tumblrs than the scents themselves. People who don't care about repackages of crap and lack of original new scents or returning old favorites as well as crappy wicks and shortened burn time but care more about the packaging. And you can't help but notice that over the past 3 years there has been more of an emphasis put on the looks of candles and not the candles themselves..there's no thought or patience or effort put into the scents anymore; anything to keep mainstream consumers and the basic bitches of America satisfied.

Very sad, very sad indeed!
